Tampa Bay's fighting for the top of the AL East. Texas is just trying to find out what it has left in the tank. Friday's the second time this week these two are on the same field.

Nick Martinez takes the ball for the Rays carrying a 13-4 record and a 2.99 ERA, about as steady a season as anyone in that rotation has had. Across from him is Kumar Rocker, still trying to find his footing in a lost year for Texas. First pitch at Globe Life Field is 7:05 PM CT.

Rocker hasn't worked past the 5th inning in 6 straight starts, and his last outing against Milwaukee was the pattern in miniature — 3 innings, 7 strikeouts, 4 walks, gone before he got anywhere close to saving the bullpen a night off. That bullpen is already stretched, with Peyton Gray and Cole Winn both freshly on the injured list and Nathan Eovaldi still weeks from a return — manager Skip Schumaker has called the elbow timeline fluid rather than committing to a date. On the other side, Tampa Bay is still without Gavin Lux, likely done for the season, and waiting on Jake Fraley to finish a rehab assignment in Durham.

The stakes are lopsided. The Rays are running the AL East with a cushion on the Yankees and a bullpen fronted by Bryan Baker that's held up all year in high-leverage spots. The Rangers, at 69-71, are mostly playing out a season that got away from them, using these final weeks to see what Rocker and the rest of a beat-up staff look like heading into next year.

Tampa Bay's last-5 form doesn't scream dominance — they dropped their most recent game before taking 1 of the first 3 from the Mets, after going 2-0 against San Diego. Texas has been the streakier of the two, going 3-2 over its last 5 and taking 2 of the first 3 from Oakland. These two also see each other before Friday's game, so whatever happens there is already in the books by the time this one starts — the form card only tells you where each club stood heading in.

Josh Jung gives the Rangers something to build around if the calf holds up on a rehab assignment — he's been cleared for full activity and could be back with the big club soon. For Tampa Bay, the bigger question is just staying healthy enough to hold off New York down the stretch. Different objectives, same building, one Friday night in Arlington.
