Tampa Bay arrives with the American League's best record and a playoff spot already locked up; New York is trying to close strong without Aaron Judge, who's out indefinitely with a calf strain. Both teams have two more games to play before this one, so the form and availability pictures here are still moving.

Rays
  • AL's best record, first team to clinch a playoff spot
  • Closer Baker: 1.54 ERA, MLB-leading 40 saves
  • Swept Athletics 3-0 in last completed series
  • Lost most recent game to Boston
  • Rotation missing McClanahan, Pepiot and Wells
  • Little left to play for could mean lighter usage of regulars
Yankees
  • Won 4 of last 5, including a 9-2 win over Arizona
  • Took 2 of 3 from Minnesota
  • Chisholm expected back this homestand per Boone
  • Aaron Judge out with calf strain, no return timeline
  • Trent Grisham also on the injured list
  • Two road games in Arizona still to play before this one

Game 2 of Tuesday's twinbill gets going at 7:05 PM ET, and neither club has locked in a starter for it yet. Both teams still have two games apiece to play before this one — the Rays host Boston twice, the Yankees close out in Arizona — so whoever takes the ball here will be shaped as much by how those four games go as by anything on the board right now.

The bigger swing factor is who's in either lineup. New York is already down Trent Grisham and will be without Aaron Judge, who went on the injured list this week with a right calf strain that has manager Aaron Boone unwilling to guess at a return — even for the postseason. Tampa Bay's absences run through the rotation instead: Shane McClanahan, Ryan Pepiot and Tyler Wells are all out, though the bullpen behind them has been the story of the season.

That bullpen is anchored by closer Baker, who's sitting on a 1.54 ERA and a major-league-leading 40 saves — the kind of back end that lets Tampa Bay play from ahead and get away with a beat-up rotation. Yankee Stadium's forecast calls for showers and a stiff wind for the series, which won't help a lineup already missing its middle-of-the-order thump.

Tampa Bay was the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff spot this year, riding the American League's best record into the stretch. That security cuts both ways — there's little left to play for beyond seeding, and how hard Kevin Cash leans on his regulars in the meantime is worth watching.

Both clubs have played well lately, and both did it in blowout fashion at points — Tampa Bay opened its recent stretch with a 14-4 rout of Houston, New York closed one out 9-2 in Arizona. Whether that holds depends on what happens in Boston and the desert before this game even starts.

The Yankees' injury list is thin in a way it wasn't a month ago: Judge, Grisham, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are all dealing with something, though Boone has said Chisholm should be back for this homestand. Tampa Bay's list is longer but lower-impact — most of it is bullpen and depth pieces rehabbing, not names in the everyday mix.
