TLDR: Miami had this one right where it wanted it before a bullpen meltdown in extras turned a coin flip into a blowout on the scoreboard.

Boston Red Sox
  • Won 4 straight before this game, swept San Francisco
  • Tolle emerging as a top rookie arm
  • Interim skipper Tracy red-hot since taking over
  • Rutschman sat out with elbow irritation
  • Missing Anthony, Yoshida and multiple rotation arms
Miami Marlins
  • Swept Washington in the series before this one
  • Playing at home in loanDepot park
  • Lost closer Fairbanks to the IL same day
  • Phillips's results have swung game to game all year
  • Lost the series opener to Boston already

Payton Tolle and Tyler Phillips were always going to set the tone here, and they mostly did what recent form suggested. Tolle came in as one of the more electric rookie arms in baseball, and Phillips has been the definition of streaky all year — capable of five shutout innings one start and an early hook the next.

The lineups told a bigger story than the pitching matchup, though. Boston played this one without Adley Rutschman, held out with right elbow irritation, while still missing Roman Anthony, Masataka Yoshida and a stack of rotation arms on the injured list. Miami, meanwhile, lost closer Pete Fairbanks to the 15-day IL the same day with nerve irritation — the exact kind of late-arriving news a market doesn't have time to fully price.

None of that stopped either club from grinding through nine scoreless-in-the-clutch innings. Both offenses managed 7 hits, both starters kept things manageable, and this had all the makings of a low-scoring coin flip right up until it wasn't.

Extra innings blew it open. Mickey Gasper's first career multi-homer game kept Boston in it, and Jarren Duran turned a tight game into a laugher with a go-ahead grand slam that put 4 runs on the board in a single swing. Miami answered with a run of its own late, but the damage was done — Boston's bullpen closed it out for a 7-3 final at loanDepot park.

The win pushed Boston's streak to 5 straight under interim manager Chad Tracy, who's turned a 10-17 start into one of the better managerial stories in baseball this summer and still can't shake the interim label. Miami, fresh off sweeping Washington, now has to figure out its bullpen picture without Fairbanks down the stretch.

Two clubs going in opposite directions collided in Miami, and the extra innings just made the gap look wider than the first nine frames actually suggested.
