Jake Bennett (4-3, 2.64 ERA) got the ball for Boston looking to keep the roll going, and Davis Martin (9-4, 3.41 ERA) had to try to stop it at 6:40 PM CT. Martin came in wobbly — his last outing against Cleveland lasted just 3.1 innings with 5 walks — and Bennett came in red-hot off a 7.2-inning, 6-strikeout win over the Angels.

Busted — the White Sox were shut out 0-5, with Martin's shaky command (the bear case) the deciding factor.

Pregame

We backed the White Sox on the moneyline at a near pick'em price, banking on Martin holding his own at home against a Boston lineup that's been erratic against right-handers. That price never priced in Bennett throwing this well, and Chicago's offense simply had nothing going against him.

The gap between the two starters showed almost immediately. Boston's lineup, which had already hung 8 runs on Chicago a night earlier, put together a 3-run third and a 2-run fourth to blow the game open early and never look back. White Sox pitching couldn't buy an out when it mattered, and the home lineup never found any answer against Bennett.

It's the kind of laugher that's become a pattern for this Red Sox club — win the close ones, then bury a struggling opponent when the door's open. Chicago, on the other hand, is now dropping series it was supposed to at least split, and the offense went cold at the worst time.

Boston's 10-hit, error-free night against a White Sox defense that committed a miscue of its own tells the story. Willson Contreras, who launched a 3-run homer just days earlier against the Angels, kept the lineup humming, and this is a team that's now won 5 straight and 9 of its last 11 — a stretch that's completely changed the tenor of the season under interim manager Chad Tracy.

The concerning part for Boston is the state of the pitching staff behind Bennett — Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Johan Oviedo and Connelly Early are all shelved, which means nights like this one, where a starter goes deep and cheap, matter more than ever. Chicago's issues are more top-line: Martin's control problems have been creeping in, and the lineup is without Everson Pereira and Austin Hays, thinning out an outfield that had no answers Wednesday.

Boston heads home having thoroughly outclassed a White Sox team that was 3 games up in the win column not long ago. If Bennett's building block continues and the bullpen holds, this is starting to look like a different Red Sox team than the one that opened the season under new management.
