Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants

TLDR: Cincinnati and San Francisco aren't playing for much down the stretch, and by the time first pitch rolls around both dugouts will be missing more names than the standings let on.

Cincinnati Reds
  • Singer strung together a strong recent run of starts
  • Took 1 of 3 in a tough road series
  • Rotation gutted — Greene, Williamson both long-term out
  • Lost 2 straight, including a shutout to tonight's foe
San Francisco Giants
  • Houser dominant in his last rotation start
  • Won last game, riding a bit of momentum
  • Lost Adames, Bericoto and Eldridge from the lineup this week
  • Worse season record than the team they're favored over

First pitch at Oracle Park is set for 6:45 PM PT, with Brady Singer (5-11, 4.72 ERA) opposing Adrian Houser (4-7, 4.08 ERA) in a matchup of two arms who've had wildly different summers. Singer spent months getting hammered before stringing together a real stretch of quality starts, while Houser only just climbed back into the rotation after a demotion to the bullpen.

Houser's return start against Houston was about as good as it gets — 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 5 strikeouts — but he hasn't taken the ball since, an odd gap for a guy who just proved he still has it. Meanwhile San Francisco's lineup has been gutted in the last few days: Willy Adames (elbow), Victor Bericoto (knee) and rookie slugger Bryce Eldridge (bereavement) are all out, on top of Carson Whisenhunt exiting his last start with elbow pain.

Cincinnati isn't exactly whole either — Hunter Greene is done for a year-plus after a second Tommy John, Michael Toglia needs shoulder surgery, and Spencer Steer may not play again this season. Both clubs are essentially auditioning bench pieces at this point, which is worth keeping in mind before leaning too hard on either side of the number.

The Reds have dropped 2 straight, including a shutout loss to this same Giants team, and took just 1 of 3 from Arizona before that. San Francisco is coming off that win but got there on the strength of pitching, not offense — a formula that gets harder to repeat with 3 regulars now out of the lineup.

Neither team is chasing a playoff spot or even a series flag worth mentioning — this is late-August roster triage more than a statement game. Whoever's bullpen holds up better over the next few weeks probably says more about their September than anything that happens tonight.
