On the mound — starting pitchers.

Andrew Abbott (4-3, 4.06) gets the ball for Cincinnati against Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.53) at 8:40 PM CT, with both lefties — well, Buehler's a righty, but both starters — coming off no-decisions where they actually pitched well. Abbott went 6 innings of 3-run ball against the Royals on 105 pitches; Buehler tossed 6 frames of 1-run ball at the Phillies on a tidy 86 pitches. Neither offense gave them anything to work with, which is exactly the theme of this matchup.

The Padres' offense has fallen off a cliff. San Diego is 1-9 in its last 10, averaging 2.6 runs a game over that stretch, and Manny Machado is hitting .174 with an OBP below his previous career-low. They got shut out 5-0 by the Mets on Friday with 3 singles to show for the night, and they dropped 2 of 3 to New York on the homestand. This is a lineup that looks like it's pressing, and Pinnacle still has them as -131 home favorites largely on the strength of Buehler and the bullpen.

Recent form.

Cincinnati isn't exactly arriving with momentum either. The Reds got swept in St. Louis over the weekend — losing 10-3, 6-5, and 5-3 — to drop 4 straight and fall to 31-33. Losing Elly De La Cruz to a hamstring strain on June 1 hasn't helped, and his MRI got bumped up to June 12, which is the kind of detail that usually doesn't mean great news. Hunter Greene is still on the 60-day IL with the elbow, though Terry Francona has hinted at a pre-All-Star-break return.

Injury report — info via ESPN.

The injury reports on both sides read like depth-chart casualty lists. San Diego is without Nick Pivetta, Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, German Marquez and Matt Waldron from the rotation alone, plus Jake Cronenworth (concussion), Ramon Laureano (labrum surgery), and Miguel Andujar pulled himself out of Sunday's game with a hamstring. Cincinnati is missing De La Cruz, Greene, Jose Trevino, Ke'Bryan Hayes, and most of its leverage bullpen between Pierce Johnson, Emilio Pagan, and Graham Ashcraft.

Total sits at 8.5 with the under juiced to -121, which feels about right given how cold both lineups are and how Petco usually plays. If you're hunting an angle, the Reds plus the runline at +1.5 (-181) is the obvious read — Cincinnati has lost 4 straight but the last 3 were all by 1 or 2 runs, and Abbott has been steady enough to keep the Reds in striking distance against a Padres lineup that hasn't hit a stretch run since Memorial Day.
