Mahle (1-8, 5.57 ERA) came in looking for a bounce-back after getting yanked in the fifth inning in each of his last two starts, and he found it against a Rockies lineup still missing Brenton Doyle. Freeland (2-7, 7.20 ERA) took the ball off a rough turn against the Dodgers where he allowed 6 earned runs in 5 innings, hunting for any kind of stability in a Colorado rotation that's already lost Jose Quintana, Tomoyuki Sugano and Chase Dollander to injury this season.

Mahle tossed 7 strong innings and the Giants cashed the moneyline in a 4-2 win.

Pregame

San Francisco opened at -148 and Tyler Mahle made the price look sharp, tossing his best start of the year. The Giants' bats stayed quiet for four innings, but the number reflected two shaky rotations more than form, and the home arm won that battle.

San Francisco's outfield picture got thinner Friday when Victor Bericoto joined Jonah Cox and Harrison Bader on the injured list, and the Giants are already without Matt Chapman at third. Colorado's bullpen is in worse shape — Seth Halvorsen, Blas Castano and Jaden Hill are all rehabbing arms on a unit that's been stretched thin all year. Oracle Park had the Giants as home favorites, and the price leaned more on a wrecked Rockies pitching staff than anything in the standings.

It played out mostly to script for six innings. Freeland actually pitched well, working around traffic and racking up 9 strikeouts, but a balk let Sullivan score in the third and the Giants couldn't answer until the fifth, when a Rodríguez double brought home Eldridge to tie it.

The game turned in the sixth. Casey Schmitt hammered a three-run homer 415 feet to left-center, plating Ramos and Arraez and turning a nervy tie game into a laugher. Mahle cruised through 7 innings on just 1 run allowed — his best outing of a season that had been defined by early exits.

Colorado still had one more shot. Kyle Karros, who's quietly been one of the few bright spots in a lost Rockies season, crushed a 435-foot solo homer in the eighth to cut the deficit to 2. It wasn't enough — Brubaker closed it out in the ninth, and the Giants held on for a 4-2 win to salvage the finale after dropping the first two games of the series.

Both teams are toiling in last place with matching sub-.500 records, but Saturday was a reminder that even bad teams have live arms and thump left in the tank. Mahle looked like a different pitcher for a day, and Karros continues to look like a piece worth building around in Denver.
