Detroit's bigger problem right now is arguably the outfield, not the rotation. Matt Vierling, Kerry Carpenter and Wenceel Perez have all missed extended time, leaving the Tigers scrambling to fill out a lineup that was supposed to be a lot deeper than this. Colorado, meanwhile, has leaned all the way into September by handing extended looks to Kyle Karros, TJ Rumfield and Cole Carrigg — auditions for next year dressed up as this year's games.
None of that changes what these two teams are actually playing for, which isn't much. The Rockies are trying to avoid a second straight 100-loss season, and the Tigers — a year removed from an AL Central title — have fallen far enough back that October isn't really in the conversation anymore. Both clubs still have games to finish before this series even starts: Colorado closes out a set with the Yankees, and Detroit wraps two with the Twins.
This is a three-game interleague set at Comerica Park, and neither side figures to treat it as anything but a chance to get right before the year runs out. For Colorado, that's about seeing what the 2027 roster might look like. For Detroit, it's about hoping Flaherty's rehab holds and the outfield picture stabilizes enough to finish with something worth building on.
