Stephen Kolek (3-0, 2.77) versus MacKenzie Gore (3-4, 4.42) is a better headline pitching matchup than either of these records would suggest. Kolek is the story everybody in Kansas City is talking about — he just spun a complete-game shutout against Seattle on May 23, 4 hits, 1 walk, 108 pitches, the first CGSO by a Royals arm since Brad Keller in 2020. Gore, for his part, was pulled mid-inning of a May 18 start in Colorado with a back issue, then came back on May 24 at Anaheim and went 6 strong with 7 punchouts and just 1 earned run.

The vibe around both clubs is grim. Kansas City got steamrolled at home by the Yankees over the weekend, losing 4-3, then 15-1, then 7-0. The Rangers just dropped 3 of 4 to Houston, including a 5-1 loss to close out the series. Pinnacle has Texas at -122 and the total sitting at 7.5 — a number that respects Kolek's run but also tells you the market isn't buying either offense to break out.

Texas has been playing without a roster's worth of names. Corey Seager (back) is at least another week away from re-evaluation. Wyatt Langford (forearm) is finally taking BP and could start a rehab assignment as soon as this weekend, which would be a real lineup jolt if it lands. Josh Smith is still on the 10-day IL with an illness, and the rotation behind Gore is missing Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bradford, both still long-tossing their way back.

Kansas City's injury sheet is the same problem it's been all year — the rotation is duct tape. Cole Ragans got shut down again after a rough Triple-A Omaha rehab outing, Kris Bubic is still dealing with arm fatigue, and the bullpen is missing Carlos Estevez (shoulder) and James McArthur, who just had elbow surgery. Matt Strahm at least looks close — he threw live BP Wednesday and is tracking toward a Sunday activation. Jonathan India is done for the year after labrum surgery.

The angle on the over/under is genuinely tricky here. Kolek has been efficient and missed barrels in a way nobody projected coming out of camp — he opened the year on the IL with an oblique strain and only stuck in the rotation because of all the bodies above. Gore's swing-and-miss stuff still shows up; that 7-K outing in Anaheim was him at his best. Two starters who can actually pitch, two lineups that haven't done much lately. Under 7.5 is the screen-friendly bet, but if Kolek's command slips even a hair, the Rangers' middle of the order can punish a 92-mph sinker that doesn't sink.

Bottom line: this is the kind of late-May game two teams in this spot need badly. The Royals haven't lost 4 in a row often this year, and the Rangers are trying not to let a Houston series turn into a full-on slide. 7:05 PM CT, Globe Life Field, and Kolek gets the chance to keep doing the thing nobody saw coming.
