Boston's turnaround has been one of the sport's stranger stories: an interim manager, a franchise-tying 15-game winning streak in July, and now a lineup that got Roman Anthony and Trevor Story back off the injured list in the season's stretch run. Kansas City's floor has been steadier — the Royals even strung together a 9-game winning streak of their own last month — but the season-long numbers say this is a last-place club auditioning young players like Jac Caglianone and Carter Jensen for 2027 rather than chasing anything in 2026.
Both clubs will lean on that injury report before Saturday. Maikel Garcia's move back toward game speed off his hamstring strain is the more meaningful update for Kansas City, a lineup that badly needs its infield depth. Boston's is Willson Contreras taking batting practice again, which matters for a Red Sox team trying to hold a wild-card spot with a full-strength lineup behind it down the stretch.
