On the mound — starting pitchers.

Noah Cameron (2-4, 4.61) gets the ball for the Royals opposite Andrew Abbott (4-3, 4.02) at 6:10 PM CT in Great American Ball Park. Cameron's last time out was a quiet five-inning, two-run loss to the Yankees on May 27, while Abbott has been quietly excellent across May, even if his last start in New York against the Mets ended in a loss line of 6 IP, 3 ER.

The Royals are riding the high of a Lane Thomas grand slam and an Edwin Arroyo debut they ruined personally, which counts as a vacation when you've won four times in your last 20. Cincinnati, meanwhile, has dropped four of five and is staring at an offense that just got handed back to it minus Elly De La Cruz, who's on the 10-day IL with a Grade 1-to-2 hamstring strain. That's a load-bearing absence for a lineup already without Ke'Bryan Hayes and Jose Trevino.

Kansas City's larger problem is still the rotation tax. Cole Ragans (elbow), Kris Bubic (arm fatigue), and Alec Marsh (shoulder) are all on the shelf, which is how a guy like Luinder Avila ends up making his second career start in the series opener. Cameron is supposed to be the steady veteran presence in that mix, but a 4.61 ERA says the steady part has been more aspiration than reality.

Abbott is the more interesting profile here. He spent May posting absurd run-prevention numbers — multiple outlets have him at sub-1.00 ERA for the month going into his Mets dud — which lines up with the All-Star form from 2025 finally reappearing. If the lefty version of Abbott that lived in May shows up tonight, a Royals lineup that scored nine on Monday is going to look a lot more like the one that hit .200 against Texas all weekend.

The market agrees the Reds are the side: Cincinnati sits at -123 on the moneyline with the total parked at 8.5. Fade the recency bias on Monday's blowout if you want, but the run-line at Reds -1.5 (+163) is the only price that feels honest given how thin the Royals are behind Cameron and how badly Abbott has been missing bats. Either way, it's the rare Kansas City game where the starter actually has a chance to dictate the night.
