Even without the Soto drama, both clubs are running through a MASH unit. Detroit is without Skubal, Verlander, Olson, Mize, Carpenter and Baez. The Mets are missing Lindor, Alvarez, Senga, Polanco and Robert Jr. Two sub-.500 records, 19-24 and 17-25, start to make more sense when you actually look at who isn't playing.

The pitching matchup is the reason to tune in. Keider Montero has quietly turned into Detroit's most stable starter while the rotation falls apart around him — he needed just 71 pitches to get through six innings of one-run ball at Kansas City on May 9, and opponents are hitting .205 off him. Nolan McLean comes in with a 2.78 ERA across eight starts and is the current betting favorite for NL Rookie of the Year, though his last outing against the Angels on May 3 was his shortest of the year after he leaned too heavily on the sinker and got squared up early in counts.
The market sees this one cleanly. Pinnacle has the Mets at -165 with a fair win probability of 60.7%, and DraftKings is shading shorter at -114 — the bigger EV play on the board, even if it's still slightly negative. The total is the spot worth a glance: Pinnacle sits at 7.5, DK is at 8, and the books disagree on where a McLean-vs-Montero day game should land.
Bottom line: this is a getaway-day matinee between two teams that are better than their records when healthy and worse than their records when they're not. If Soto plays, the Mets are a comfortable favorite. If he doesn't, Montero against a banged-up lineup that already had to scratch out three off the Tigers on Wednesday is a more interesting puzzle than the line suggests.
