On the mound — starting pitchers.

Casey Mize (3-5, 2.64 ERA) got the ball for the rubber match, riding a scorching stretch that included a 7-inning, 10-strikeout, no-walk gem against the Yankees his last time out. Kumar Rocker (2-6, 3.95) countered for Texas off a quietly strong outing of his own — 6 innings, no earned runs against Toronto. It made for a legit pitching matchup to decide a series, first pitch set for 2:30 PM CT.

Both rotations have had to paper over real absences to get here. Detroit is still without Gleyber Torres, Jackson Jobe and Justin Verlander, among others, while the Rangers are missing shortstop Corey Seager (back) and just lost reliever Jalen Beeks for the season to arm surgery. Texas also scratched Josh Jung from Sunday's lineup, thinning out an already dinged-up group. None of that stopped Rocker from giving his team a chance — the appeal here was two arms trending up, not two teams trending down.

Detroit came in as the market's pick to win outright and cover, and the number moved a touch toward Texas late without flipping anything — the price still framed Detroit as live value against a Rangers team that's actually got the better record on paper.

The Tigers waited on this one. Nothing happened through 3 innings, then Detroit cracked it open — 2 runs in the 4th, 4 more in the 5th — while Texas answered in single runs, one in the 3rd, one in the 5th, one in the 8th, never able to string enough together to make it a game. Detroit out-hit the Rangers 10-6 and got the benefit of a Texas error, the kind of clean, opportunistic baseball that's carried this stretch.

This capped a run where Detroit won 4 of its last 5, including a full sweep of the Yankees right before landing in Arlington. The Tigers still sit under .500 at 39-50 with a rotation and lineup missing key pieces, but form like this is why they were live in this series even as road underdogs. Texas, meanwhile, drops to 2 losses in its last 3 and now heads into the next stretch trying to patch a lineup and bullpen that just took two more hits.
