On the mound — starting pitchers.

The Tigers are 18-20 and the wheels feel a little wobbly. They've dropped 9 of their last 13, the rotation is held together with tape, and the bullpen is short too. Kansas City, meanwhile, is finally playing the baseball everyone keeps insisting they're capable of. The Royals sit at 17-21 but they've been the better team for two weeks.

The pitching matchup tells the story of Detroit's spring. Keider Montero gets the ball at 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA, and that's not a complaint — it's just that Montero is making this start because Tarik Skubal, Justin Verlander, Casey Mize, and Reese Olson are all on the IL. Kris Bubic counters for KC at 3-1, 3.32, and he's coming off 7 innings of 1-run ball against the Mariners on May 3 with 7 strikeouts. He's been the Royals' most consistent starter.

Injury report — info via ESPN.

Detroit's injury list reads like a depth chart. Skubal, Verlander, Mize, Olson, Will Vest, Beau Brieske, Connor Seabold, Troy Melton, Bailey Horn — that's an entire pitching staff. Add Javier Baez at short and Parker Meadows in center and you start to understand why a team that was supposed to run the AL Central is hovering around .500. The Royals aren't perfectly healthy either (Cole Ragans day-to-day, Carlos Estevez and Bailey Falter out of the pen), but it's not the same kind of triage.

Vegas has the Royals at -139 home favorites with a total of 8.5, and that feels about right given the pitching edge and the form lines. DK money is interestingly split — 88% of moneyline handle is on Detroit despite only 37% of the bets, which is sharp money taking the dog. The model still tags both sides as small negative EV, so this is more of a watch-the-game spot than a hammer-it spot.

For the Tigers, the path is simple even if it isn't easy: get to Bubic early, because their bullpen can't be asked to grind out a tight one-run loss right now. For the Royals, hand Bubic a lead and let him work into the 7th the way he just did in Seattle. If Detroit is going to steal one in this series, this probably isn't the night.
