Connor Prielipp vs. Michael Soroka is the pitching mismatch on paper — a 5.26 ERA lefty trying to slow down the guy who's quietly gone 8-3 with a 3.11 for Arizona. Soroka's last time out he carved the Reds for 7 innings of 1-run, 2-hit, 7-K ball with zero walks. Prielipp's last start was 6 innings of 4-earned against St. Louis, with only 2 strikeouts on 98 pitches. The stuff plays, the command hasn't.
The Twins arrive on a 4-game heater after sweeping Texas, and they did it by jumping starters in the 1st — Brooks Lee, Trevor Larnach and the rest of that lineup put up crooked numbers before opposing pitchers got loose. That's the warning sign for Soroka, who has been efficient but lives in the zone. Arizona, meanwhile, just took 2 of 3 from the Angels at Chase and is trying to settle a rotation that lost Corbin Burnes for the season to a teres major strain.

Arizona's injury list is the real story behind this series. Burnes is shut down, Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk are both 60-day arms missing from the bullpen, and Carlos Santana is still working back from a thigh issue. The Diamondbacks are essentially asking Soroka and the lineup — Carroll, Marte, Suárez — to drag them through games they used to ace their way through. That's been working at home so far, but the margin is thinner than the 38-36 record suggests.

The Twins have their own pitching headaches — Pablo Lopez (60-day), Bailey Ober and David Festa are all out, with Mick Abel lined up to come off the IL for Sunday's finale. That makes Friday a bullpen-management night either way: Prielipp probably isn't going 6 if Arizona starts stacking baserunners, and Rocco Baldelli will need length from a relief group that's been overworked through the sweep stretch.
Stylistically, Soroka pounding the zone against a Twins lineup that's been ambushing first-pitch fastballs is the pivot point. If Minnesota gets to him early like they got to Jack Leiter, this thing flips fast. If he sets the tone in the 1st, Prielipp's margin shrinks to almost nothing.
