Erick Fedde (2-5, 4.50) draws Tarik Skubal (3-3, 2.81) at 6:40 PM ET in the opener, and the ERA gap undersells how lopsided this looks on paper. Skubal is the reigning AL Cy Young guy. Fedde is a back-end veteran who has been quietly stingy lately.
The wrinkle is that Skubal is barely back. He had a loose body cleaned out of his left elbow in early May, made a rehab start with High-A West Michigan on June 7, and his first big-league outing back on June 13 in Cleveland went 4.2 innings, 80 pitches, 2 earned, and a loss. He's still a problem, but he's not stretched out and the Tigers will not let him chase 100 pitches in mid-June. Fedde, meanwhile, last took the ball June 3 in Minnesota and threw 5 shutout innings on 61 pitches with 2 hits allowed. Long layoff for him, sharp form when he last pitched.
The bigger story is the standings flip nobody saw coming. The White Sox are 39-34 and just took a road game off the Yankees 5-1 on Wednesday to salvage a series they were getting steamrolled in. The Tigers are 30-44, dropped 4 of 5, and got swept around a tie game in Cleveland and Houston. Will Venable's group is the team with the momentum here, which is a sentence that did not exist 12 months ago.

Health is doing Detroit no favors. Gleyber Torres is still down with a side issue, Wenceel Perez took a plyo band to the face in the weight room and isn't really an option off the bench, and Jack Flaherty hit the IL with a peroneal strain. The rotation is being held together by Skubal's surgically-cleaned elbow and Justin Verlander's hip, which is returning to start Sunday. Chicago is banged up too — Hagen Smith is shut down 2 weeks with a shoulder impingement and Jordan Hicks is rehabbing — but they got Everson Pereira back off the IL on Thursday.

The market still treats this like a coin-flip-plus for Detroit, with the Tigers around -218 and the total parked at 7.5. The under has gotten a small juice nudge from -121 down to -101, which tracks with Skubal-on-a-leash plus a bullpen game lurking the rest of the way. If the White Sox can get to Skubal early before he gets pulled in the 5th, the back end of Detroit's pen is where this gets interesting.
