TLDR: Philadelphia and Indiana meet Wednesday, October 28 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the injury reports might matter more than the standings. Both teams have a big man to worry about, and the Sixers have most of a rotation to worry about.

Philadelphia (3-1) visits Indiana in a game shaped by injuries on both sides: Embiid's plantar fasciitis management, Edgecombe's abdominal contusion and Caldwell-Pope's wrist for the Sixers, and Zubac's sprained ankle for the Pacers. Indiana plays at Milwaukee on Monday first, while Philly gets 2 days of rest. The Bucks game will show what the Pacers look like without Zubac, and the Sixers' injury report will show how many of their own guards and bigs are available.

Philadelphia 76ers
  • 2 days of rest against an Indiana team playing Monday
  • Won 3 straight before the short-handed Detroit loss
  • Embiid's absence was rest management, not a new injury
  • Edgecombe and Caldwell-Pope both banged up at guard
  • Frontcourt down Hukporti, Barlow, Fall and Walker
  • Offense stalled at 93 without Embiid and Edgecombe
Indiana Pacers
  • Outscored Brooklyn 112-83 after the 1st quarter
  • Home court after the Milwaukee road game
  • Scored 136 even after Zubac left early

Philadelphia's start has looked better than the roster behind it. The Sixers won 3 straight, winning 106-100 at Madison Square Garden and then beating Cleveland and Milwaukee at home, before Detroit beat them 106-93. That Pistons game was the second night of a back-to-back, Embiid and Edgecombe both sat, and Detroit led 34-22 after 1 quarter and never let the lead shrink. Philly is 3-1, and the 1 loss came with the Sixers missing a big chunk of their roster.

The bigger story is how Philly comes out of Sunday. Embiid's absence was listed as plantar fasciitis management, which reads like a plan to rest him rather than a setback, so Wednesday comes down to whether that plan includes this game. Edgecombe took a shot to the midsection against Milwaukee and was too sore to go against Detroit. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope started in his place and then left with an apparent right wrist injury. Behind them the frontcourt is very thin: Hukporti is done for the year, Barlow is out at least 2 weeks with a back stress reaction, and Tacko Fall and Jabari Walker both sat Sunday.

Indiana has its own center problem. Ivica Zubac rolled his left ankle in the 1st quarter at Brooklyn, tried to play a few possessions on it, then went to the locker room and didn't return. The X-rays were negative, but he left the arena on crutches with a swollen ankle. Rick Carlisle called him unlikely for Monday's game in Milwaukee. Wednesday is 2 days after that, so whether Zubac can play here is still unknown.

Without him, the Pacers looked good anyway. Brooklyn led 26-24 after the 1st, and Indiana outscored the Nets 112-83 the rest of the way, including a 41-point 2nd quarter and a 37-24 3rd. That was a tired Nets team on a back-to-back, though, and Dallas had beaten Indiana by 16 in Indianapolis 2 nights earlier. So far the Pacers have been good some nights and very bad on others.

The schedule tilts toward Philadelphia. The Sixers last played Sunday, so they get 2 full days off before tipoff. Indiana plays at Milwaukee on Monday and then flies home for this one. That Bucks game is the one result still missing from this preview. It will show whether Indiana can win without Zubac, how hard Carlisle works his healthy guys with T.J. McConnell and Ben Sheppard both out, and how much the Pacers have left on short rest.

Tipoff is 7:00 PM ET. If Embiid plays and Zubac doesn't, Philadelphia has the biggest frontcourt edge in the game. If it's the other way around, Indiana's quick, high-scoring offense gets to run against a thin Sixers group. Most of this game will be decided by injury reports that haven't come out yet.
