TLDR: The Bulls have given up 124 or more in all 7 of their games, and Wednesday they get the Knicks for a second time in a week. The last meeting was a 133-127 shootout that New York won in Chicago, and the Bulls have not found a way to slow anybody down since.

The Chicago Bulls (1-6, 5 straight losses) visit Madison Square Garden after giving up 124 or more in every game, including a 133-127 loss to these Knicks in Chicago. New York just beat Brooklyn with a 4th-quarter clampdown behind Brunson and Towns, while rookie Caleb Wilson carries a Bulls team that could get center Nic Claxton back from a camp hamstring strain. No odds are posted yet.

Chicago Bulls
  • Caleb Wilson scoring 20-plus, 24 by halftime in Philly
  • Scored 127 on the Knicks a week ago
  • Claxton practicing fully, nearing season debut
  • Allowed 124+ in all 7 games
  • Lost 3rd and 4th quarters in Philadelphia
  • Claxton still out; no rim protection yet
New York Knicks
  • Held Brooklyn to 11 points in the 4th
  • Brunson 24 and Towns 22-12 vs Nets
  • Already beat Chicago once this season

This is a defense story before it's anything else. Chicago is 1-6 and has lost 5 straight. The Sixers just shot 52.7% on them, including a 36-28 4th quarter that turned an 11-point game into a 126-107 loss. The Bulls stayed close for a half, which they've done a few times now. They've also come apart after halftime a few times now.

Caleb Wilson is the one thing working. The 4th overall pick out of UNC had 24 by halftime in Philadelphia, and Yahoo Sports had him at 21.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.5 blocks a game going into that one. He's also the one saying it out loud. "I've never been a loser," Wilson said after the 35-point loss in Boston. "I'm not ever going to be accepting of losing." Coming from a rookie, that's either leadership or a warning to the locker room. Probably both.

New York got right the way good teams usually do: slowly, then all at once. Brooklyn led 79-75 after a 35-point 3rd quarter at the Garden, then managed 11 points in the 4th on the back end of a back-to-back, and the Knicks won 103-90. Jalen Brunson had 24 and 6 assists, Karl-Anthony Towns had 22 and 12, and it came right after a Cup loss in Philadelphia. Holding a team to 11 in a quarter is a very different look from the 133 they gave up in Chicago.

The 1st meeting is the best tape for Wednesday. The Bulls scored 127 at home and still lost by 6, so the offense can keep up with this team for stretches. The problem is that putting up 127 and losing is the best version of Chicago anyone has seen. Brunson and Towns can trade baskets all night, and the Bulls have yet to string together the 3rd and 4th quarters it would take to steal one.

Nic Claxton is the name to watch. The veteran center strained his left hamstring in training camp and hasn't played yet, but he was a full participant in practice ahead of the Philly game and got upgraded to doubtful before he was ruled out, per Hoops Rumors. If he makes his Bulls debut at MSG, Chicago finally has a real rim protector behind Wilson and a body to throw at Towns. Even then, a center playing his 1st game of the season isn't going to fix a team that has given up 124 or more 7 times in 7 games.

Tip is 7:30 PM ET on Wednesday, November 4. The Knicks are home and their 2 stars are rolling. The Bulls have a rookie who refuses to accept any of this and a roster that hasn't backed him up yet. The board isn't up, but the questions are clear enough: does Claxton play, and can Chicago defend for 48 minutes for the 1st time this season?
