TLDR: The Bulls' new era gets its first trip into thin air. Tiago Splitter's rebuilt roster heads to Ball Arena on Sunday, October 11, and Denver doesn't hand anybody easy preseason minutes.

MON 10/12, 7:00 PMESPN

A preseason stop at Ball Arena for a Bulls team still learning itself under first-year coach Tiago Splitter, with No. 4 pick Caleb Wilson and a batch of veteran newcomers. Chicago's frontcourt is thinned by Nic Claxton's hamstring and Zach Collins' toe, and the Bulls play Memphis before this one, so their rotation could look different by Sunday. Denver split 2 preseason games with Utah and has a light injury list.

Chicago Bulls
  • No. 4 pick Caleb Wilson getting live reps
  • Powell and Hield add proven scoring punch
  • Several new pieces getting a look early
  • Claxton hamstring, re-evaluated in 2 weeks
  • Collins (toe) also banged up up front
  • Plays Memphis first, rotation still unsettled
Denver Nuggets
  • Home at altitude against a visiting roster
  • Bounced back to beat Utah 93-79
  • Only Spencer Jones on the injury list

This is exhibition basketball, so the useful question isn't who wins. It's what Chicago looks like. The Bulls opened their 5-game preseason at home against Phoenix in Splitter's first game as head coach. That was also the first look at No. 4 overall pick Caleb Wilson in a Bulls uniform, alongside newcomers Norman Powell, Nic Claxton and Buddy Hield. A roster with that many new pieces needs reps more than results, and a road game in Denver is about as honest a test as the preseason offers.

The Bulls won't come to this one fresh off the Suns game, though. They host Memphis on October 9 first, and that game will decide a lot about Sunday: who logs heavy minutes, who sits, and whether the guard rotation fills back in. Tre Jones and Jaylin Sellers (back) both sat out against Phoenix, and so did Zach Collins (toe). Expect Splitter's lineup in Denver to look different from either of the first 2 nights.

Denver's preseason has been a split with Utah. The Jazz took the opener 109-97, and the Nuggets answered with a 93-79 win in the rematch. By Sunday they'll have had a few days off, playing their first home game against a team other than Utah. The one name on Denver's list is Spencer Jones, who sat out the win over the Jazz with a hamstring issue.

The injury Chicago really feels is Claxton. He tweaked a hamstring and is getting re-evaluated in 2 weeks, so he won't play this one. He was brought in to anchor the paint, and with Collins also banged up, the Bulls' frontcourt behind him is thin.

That leaves Sunday as a stress test for the Bulls' size. If Claxton and Collins are both out, Chicago's bigs have to deal with a Denver frontcourt playing at home at altitude, where visiting legs fade by the second half. It's also a chance to see how Wilson handles real NBA size and physicality away from the United Center crowd.

Tip is 7:00 PM MT. It's preseason, so starters' minutes are whatever the coaches want them to be. Watch the rotations, how Wilson looks, and whether the Bulls' new guards have figured out how to share the ball. The score is the least important number of the night.
