TLDR: Thursday night in Cleveland is the first look at a Boston team that looks very different: Jayson Tatum back for a full season, Jaylen Brown gone, Paul George in green. It's the preseason opener for both clubs, and Cleveland walks in with the same core and a coach who says his starting 5 isn't set.

THU OCT 8, 7:00 PM

The Celtics and Cavaliers open their preseasons in Cleveland. Boston is rebuilding its scoring around Jayson Tatum and Paul George after trading Jaylen Brown. Kenny Atkinson calls Cleveland's starting lineup unsettled and is auditioning a deep rotation that includes newcomer Peyton Watson, who is day-to-day with a hamstring issue. Both teams are coming off travel-heavy camps, so this is a first look at rotations rather than a test of either team.

Boston Celtics
  • Tatum back for a full season after ACL tear
  • Paul George healthy in camp, adds floor spacing
  • Pritchard shot 42.2% from 3 post-break last season
  • Lost Jaylen Brown, last season's most reliable scorer
  • George played 78 games across 2 Philly seasons
  • White coming off career-low 39.4% shooting
Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Home opener for the preseason at Rocket Arena
  • Atkinson sees a 13-man rotation's worth of depth
  • Watson praised as super active on both ends
  • Starting lineup not set, per Atkinson
  • Watson day-to-day with a hamstring issue
  • Coming back from a camp in Spain

This is exhibition basketball, and nobody in either building should treat it as anything else. Still, both teams have real questions, and this is the first time anyone sees the answers on an NBA floor. Tip is 7:00 PM ET on Thursday, October 8 at Rocket Arena, and both clubs are 0-0 with nothing to protect except some hamstrings.

Boston's question is simple: who scores when Tatum sits? The Celtics traded Jaylen Brown, their most reliable scorer last season, and Paul George was the main piece coming back in a deal that took criticism for not getting enough. George spent 2 years in Philadelphia and played 78 games over that stretch, so the Boston Globe calls his health the most important factor in Boston's season. He's healthy in camp. Behind him, Derrick White needs to fix a career-low 39.4% from the field and 32.7% from 3, and Payton Pritchard looks set for more shots after hitting 42.2% from deep after last season's All-Star break.

Joe Mazzulla's theme for camp is offensive versatility: more ball handlers, a less predictable attack, lighter loads for any 1 guy. That goes all the way down the roster. Neemias Queta has been told he can shoot 3s. A preseason opener is where you find out whether that's a real plan or just a camp talking point.

Cleveland's preseason runs through Kenny Atkinson's rotation. Atkinson has said flatly that the starting lineup is not set, said there are new pieces to evaluate, and said he could make a case for playing 13 guys. Expect Thursday to look like an open audition, with minutes spread out and a lot of names in the box score.

The new piece getting the most attention is Peyton Watson. Atkinson has called him super active on both ends, praised his fit and said there's a lot of room for growth in his offensive game. Watson is listed day-to-day with a hamstring issue, and in an October exhibition that usually means Cleveland plays it safe. Whether he plays at all is worth checking before tip.

Both teams also travel to get here. Cleveland held camp in Spain, with practices starting September 30 and a scrimmage in Malaga on October 4. Boston practiced at The Citadel in Charleston through Tuesday and flies to Cleveland on Wednesday. Expect rust from both sides. What's worth watching is how much Mazzulla plays Tatum and George together, and whether Atkinson's 13-man audition produces anything clear.
