TLDR: The Clippers are missing 5 players and the Thunder just won a game in which Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 17. Sunday in Oklahoma City is a good test of how much depth LA really has left.

A 2-0 Oklahoma City team hosts the 1-1 Clippers, who are missing Beal, Ingram, Strus, Miller and Konan Niederhauser and are leaning on Darius Garland's scoring. The Thunder have won with defense and 3rd-quarter runs, even on an off night from Gilgeous-Alexander. The matchup is OKC's full rotation against LA's thin bench in the 2nd half. No betting line has posted yet.

LA Clippers
  • Garland scored 30 in the Lakers game
  • Won the 4th quarter 27-22 while short-handed
  • Blew out Sacramento 121-96
  • Beal, Ingram, Strus, Miller, Konan Niederhauser all out
  • Lost the 3rd quarter 39-26 to the Lakers
  • 1 day of rest plus travel to OKC
Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Held Denver to 84 points
  • Won the 3rd quarter 26-16 to pull away
  • 2 full days of rest before tipoff
  • SGA shot 6-of-19 against Denver
  • Trailed Denver 48-44 at the half
  • Topic and Sorber out of the rotation

Oklahoma City is 2-0 as of Saturday. The Thunder won 116-104 in San Antonio, then held Denver to 84 in the home opener. The Nuggets game was the more telling one. OKC trailed 48-44 at the half, won the 3rd quarter 26-16 and pulled away on defense. They did it on a night Gilgeous-Alexander went 6-of-19 and his NBA-record run of 141 straight 20-point games ended. It ended partly by his own choice. Up 93-76 with 1:43 left, he asked to come out after Denver went to its bench.

The Clippers are 1-1 as of Saturday. They beat Sacramento 121-96 at home, then lost the first Battle of LA 125-117. That game was tied 64-64 at the half. Then the Lakers won the 3rd quarter 39-26, and the Clippers spent the 4th cutting a 13-point deficit down to 8. Darius Garland scored 30 and carried the offense, which is what he will be asked to do every night for a while. Bradley Beal (knee), Brandon Ingram (partially torn Achilles), Max Strus (plantar fascia), Jordan Miller (rotator cuff surgery) and Yanic Konan Niederhauser (foot) are all out.

No number has posted for this one yet, so the board below is waiting on the books. Tipoff is 6:00 PM CT on Sunday, October 25, at Paycom Center. The Clippers come in on 1 day of rest after the Lakers game, plus the flight from LA. The Thunder will have had 2 full days off since beating Denver.

Both teams have been decided in the 3rd quarter so far. OKC owned that quarter against Denver, and the Clippers gave the Lakers game away in it. A thin roster usually shows up after halftime, once the starters' legs go and the bench has to hold a lead or keep the game close. The Thunder held a full Nuggets lineup to 84 and are getting their scoring from more than 1 player. That is a hard team to keep up with when your best wing scorers are in street clothes.

Oklahoma City has injuries too, but they are much smaller. Nikola Topic (back) and Thomas Sorber (knee) both missed the Denver game, and the club plans to waive Otega Oweh, who is recovering from an Achilles injury. None of those players is in the core rotation the way Ingram, Beal and Strus are for LA. For the Clippers, it comes down to this: Garland was terrific against the Lakers and it was still not enough. Somebody else has to show up for 48 minutes.

The Clippers' route is real but narrow. They have beaten a bad team comfortably and stayed within 8 of a good one on the road. Garland is playing well enough to keep them in games against anybody. Gilgeous-Alexander is also unlikely to shoot 6-of-19 twice in a row, and this is the first home game the Thunder play after his streak ended.
