TLDR: Neither team in this preseason game looks like last year's version. Memphis has traded Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., and Chicago has a new coach. Friday at the United Center is an early look at what each club is building.

Memphis and Chicago meet in the preseason with both rosters in transition. The Grizzlies have moved on from Morant and Jackson and are building around rookie Cameron Boozer, while the Bulls start the Tiago Splitter era after Billy Donovan stepped down. Both frontcourts are thin, with Isaiah Stewart day-to-day for Memphis and Nic Claxton and Zach Collins hurt for Chicago, so the bench bigs could decide the rebounding. No lines are posted for the game.

Memphis Grizzlies
  • Boozer filled the box score in his preseason debut
  • 35-point 2nd quarter against Orlando showed scoring punch
  • Ty Jerome scored 17 against the Magic
  • Outrebounded 64-55 by Orlando without Stewart
  • Stewart and Peavy both day-to-day with ankle injuries
  • Lost at home to a Magic team missing 3 regulars
Chicago Bulls
  • Home game at the United Center
  • Memphis frontcourt is also short-handed
  • Claxton out with a hamstring, re-evaluated in 2 weeks
  • Collins, Jones and Sellers all sat against Phoenix
  • New coach still settling his rotation

Start with Memphis, because the change there is bigger. The Grizzlies sent Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah in February and traded Ja Morant to Portland in June. The headliner now is Cameron Boozer, the No. 3 pick, who had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 18 minutes of a 132-123 preseason win over Atlanta to open the exhibition schedule. That isn't a breakout, but it's the kind of all-around line that shows why Memphis took him.

The Grizzlies' second game was harder. Orlando beat them 122-118 at FedExForum while sitting Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black and Noah Penda. The Magic led from a 36-26 1st quarter and won the glass 64-55 against a Memphis frontcourt playing without Isaiah Stewart. Memphis did put up a 35-point 2nd quarter, and Ty Jerome's 17 points kept them close. Stewart is still day-to-day with an ankle problem, and Micah Peavy, also day-to-day with an ankle, sat out the Orlando game too.

Chicago has a new voice on the bench. Billy Donovan stepped down in April, and Tiago Splitter is running the Bulls in 2026-27. The early coverage has called this season a reset for a fan base that has run out of patience. This is the Bulls' 2nd preseason game, after Wednesday's opener against Phoenix. The rest of the exhibition slate is Denver, Milwaukee and Minnesota before the regular-season opener at Toronto on Oct. 21.

The Bulls' frontcourt is the immediate problem. Nic Claxton tweaked his hamstring and will be re-evaluated in 2 weeks, so he is probably out for most of the preseason. Zach Collins (toe) didn't play against the Suns. In the backcourt, Tre Jones and Jaylin Sellers (back) also sat Wednesday.

So both teams are short on bigs. Memphis just got outrebounded by 9 without Stewart. Chicago may be without both Claxton and Collins at the United Center. Whichever coach finds a backup big who can hold up on the glass will learn the most from this one. For Splitter, a former NBA center, that is also his first real problem to solve.

Tip is 7:00 PM CT Friday. Box scores from October don't count for much, so watch the rotations. Track Boozer's minutes and how often Memphis runs the offense through him. On Chicago's side, look at who Splitter trusts in the frontcourt while his centers are hurt. Both teams open the regular season on Oct. 21, and the people who matter most to each of them are still learning who fits.
