TLDR: Memphis was supposed to spend this season taking its lumps after trading Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. Instead the Grizzlies roll into Sacramento on Sunday at 2-0, and the Kings are 0-2 and down to 1 healthy center.

The Grizzlies, rebuilding after trading Morant, Bane and Jackson, opened 2-0 with a blowout of Utah and a 4th-quarter comeback at Golden State. The Kings are 0-2 after giving up 121 and 128 points, and they have no backup center behind Sabonis with Cardwell and Raynaud both out. The game likely turns on whether Sacramento can get stops, and on whether Coward and Edey are available for Memphis.

Memphis Grizzlies
  • Closed Golden State with a 27-18 4th quarter
  • Won both games by a combined 23 points
  • Kings have no healthy backup center
  • Coward missed the Warriors win with a wrist injury
  • Edey's minutes managed after 2 ankle surgeries
  • Very young core, Boozer is 19
Sacramento Kings
  • Sabonis: 27-19-10 triple-double vs Portland
  • First home game of the week with no travel
  • Allowed 121 and 128 in 2 games
  • Cardwell and Raynaud out, no center depth
  • Gave up a 44-point quarter to Portland

Tipoff is 6:00 PM PT at Golden 1 Center, and the two teams have had very different first weeks. Memphis finished 25-57 last season, its worst record since 2017-18, and came into this one as a rebuild built around Zach Edey, Cedric Coward, No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer and new starting point guard Ty Jerome. So far it has played well past that label: a 123-103 home win over Utah, then a 111-108 win that spoiled Golden State's home opener at Chase Center.

That Warriors win is the clearest look at who this team is right now. Memphis trailed 90-84 after Golden State won the 3rd quarter 34-24, then held the Warriors to 18 points in the 4th and scored 27 to close it out. They did all of that without Coward, who sat with a wrist injury. Whether he plays Sunday is still open, and he matters on a roster this young. Tuomas Iisalo, in his 2nd year as coach, has also been clear that Memphis will be careful with Edey as he comes back from 2 left ankle surgeries. Keep an eye on both before tip.

Sacramento's opening week has gone the other way. The Kings got hammered 121-96 by the Clippers on the road, then came home and dropped a 128-120 game to Portland in which the Blazers scored 44 in the 3rd quarter. Deni Avdija scored 26 for Portland, and Morant, now a Blazer, was in that game too.

Domantas Sabonis is about all that's working for Sacramento right now. Against Portland he put up a 27-point, 19-rebound, 10-assist triple-double on 10-of-13 shooting, and the Kings still lost by 8. A line like that from your big man shouldn't come with a loss. It points to everything around him: 2 straight opponents have scored 121 or more, and the defense has had a bad quarter in each game.

The injury report shows why Sabonis is carrying so much. Dylan Cardwell (calf) and Maxime Raynaud (knee) are both out for at least the first 5 or 6 games, so there's no real backup center behind him. Ben Simmons is out after surgery to repair a torn right Achilles. Every minute Sabonis sits, Sacramento is playing small, and a Memphis team built around a 7-foot-4 center would love to see that if Edey is cleared for real minutes.

So the question for Sunday is simple. Can the Kings defend for 48 minutes against a young team that has already closed out 1 game on the road, or does Sabonis put up another huge line in another loss? Memphis has won 2 straight playing loose with nothing to lose. Sacramento is 2 games in and already looking for answers.
