TLDR: Memphis traded Ja Morant to Portland in June, and Thursday, October 29 is the first time he sees them from the other bench. The Grizzlies get there 4-0 without him, which makes the reunion a lot more interesting than a lot of people expected.

The unbeaten Memphis Grizzlies visit a rebuilt Portland Trail Blazers team that now has Ja Morant, the guard Memphis traded away in June, alongside a healthy Damian Lillard. Ty Jerome has carried Memphis through a 4-0 start full of close finishes. Portland plays at the Lakers first, and that game will show whether Scoot Henderson's sore ankle and Branden Carlson's concussion thin out the Blazers' rotation. Betting picks are on hold until both teams have this game up next.

Memphis Grizzlies
  • Ty Jerome averaging huge numbers, 45-point opener included
  • 2 full days of rest before tipoff
  • Cedric Coward giving them size: 16 and 11 in Utah
  • Narrow wins over Golden State and Utah
  • Gave up a 29-21 4th quarter to a short-handed Jazz
  • 4th straight road game
Portland Trail Blazers
  • Lillard and Morant both playing, a 2-star backcourt
  • Opened with a 41-point win over Phoenix
  • Avdija scored 26 in the win at Sacramento
  • Henderson's ankle and Carlson's concussion are unresolved
  • Plays at the Lakers first, quick trip home
  • New coach, new backcourt, only a few games together

Start with Memphis, because nobody had them here. The Grizzlies are 4-0, and the guy carrying them is Ty Jerome. He dropped 45 on Utah in the opener, then 28 at Golden State and 31 at Sacramento. That's a lead guard scoring like one in the first season after the franchise moved its lead guard. The 4th win was a group effort: Cedric Coward put up 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 110-105 win in Salt Lake City, on the second night of a back-to-back with travel.

Portland changed almost everything this summer. Micah Nori was hired as head coach in June. A week later the Blazers sent Jerami Grant and Kris Murray to Memphis for Morant. Damian Lillard is back after missing all of last season with a torn Achilles. The early returns were loud. The Blazers opened with a 21-0 run on Phoenix and won that game 124-83, with Lillard scoring 25 and Morant handing out 8 assists. Then Deni Avdija scored 26 in a 128-120 win at Sacramento.

Portland still has a game to play before this one: at the Lakers on Tuesday. That game decides what the Blazers look like when they get home Thursday. Scoot Henderson was listed questionable for it with left ankle soreness, and backup center Branden Carlson was still in concussion protocol. If either one is still out after the Lakers game, Nori's rotation gets thinner, and Portland also has a short turnaround from Los Angeles back to the Moda Center. Memphis has had 2 days off by the time this one tips.

The 4-0 is real, but none of it has come easy. Golden State took Memphis to the final possession in a 111-108 game. In Utah the Grizzlies led by 13 going into the 4th quarter and still had to sweat out the finish. The Jazz won that quarter 29-21 after losing Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. during the game. Memphis has led a lot and closed out shakily. Against a backcourt of Lillard and Morant, a 4th-quarter lead is a much less safe place to be than it was in Salt Lake City.

The game itself comes down to Jerome against the guards who replaced the one Memphis traded away. If Jerome keeps scoring like he has for 4 games, the Grizzlies have a real answer to Portland's backcourt. If Morant and Lillard turn it into a shootout, Memphis has to win it on depth, and depth is what the Grizzlies got back in the Morant trade. Tipoff is 7:00 PM PT at the Moda Center.
