TLDR: Memphis opened the season with a 20-point win that Ty Jerome took over. On Friday, October 23, the Grizzlies head to Chase Center to face a Golden State roster already missing a lot of bodies.

Memphis comes to San Francisco after a 123-103 opening win over Utah, led by Ty Jerome's career-high 45 and an Edey-anchored frontcourt. Golden State plays the Lakers first and is already without Porzingis, Bassey, Podziemski, Butler and Moody, which leaves its big-man rotation thin against Edey. The Grizzlies' weak spot is bench shot creation when Jerome sits, and that is where the Warriors' chances look best.

Memphis Grizzlies
  • Jerome scored a career-high 45 in the opener
  • Edey dominated the glass against a team with no true center
  • Won 2nd and 3rd quarters by a combined 69-48
  • Bench couldn't create shots with Jerome sitting
  • Iisalo resting all starters at once let Utah build leads
  • Short turnaround and a flight west for a Friday road game
Golden State Warriors
  • Home opener at Chase Center after a road start
  • Gets a game in Los Angeles before this one to work out the rotation
  • Porzingis and Bassey both out, so the frontcourt is thin
  • Podziemski's back injury is a lingering question
  • Butler and Moody out until midseason at the earliest

The Memphis opener was a 1-man show for long stretches. Jerome scored a career-high 45 on 17-of-25 shooting against Utah and got to 40 with a 3 from the logo. Memphis won the 2nd and 3rd quarters by a combined 69-48 and took a 19-point lead into the 4th. The Jazz played that game with no true center, and Memphis made them pay for it inside.

That part matters for Friday, because Golden State's frontcourt is thin too. Kristaps Porzingis is out and reportedly thinking about his future in basketball as his POTS symptoms keep coming back. Charles Bassey is out with a knee injury. That leaves Zach Edey, who SI's opening-night review credited with a big defensive and rebounding impact, going against a short rotation of bigs. The Warriors are also without Brandin Podziemski (back), plus Jimmy Butler III and Moses Moody, who are both on long-term rehab timelines.

Golden State has to play the Lakers in Los Angeles before this one, so the Warriors who take the floor at Chase Center will have a game behind them that hasn't been written up yet. Whether Podziemski's back holds up and how much the rotation gets used in that game will shape what this matchup looks like. Memphis has its result in hand. It also has a short turnaround and a flight west before the 7:00 PM PT tip.

Memphis showed real support around Jerome in the opener. Jerami Grant scored 15 on 4-of-8 shooting in his Grizzlies debut. Jaylen Wells was diving for loose balls and getting deflections on the perimeter while the lead grew to 22. The concern was what happened when Jerome sat. Tuomas Iisalo rested his starters at the same time, the bench struggled to create shots, and Utah built leads in those stretches. A Golden State team playing at home will be watching for those minutes.

The game probably comes down to 2 questions. Can Golden State's makeshift frontcourt keep Edey off the glass, and can the Memphis second unit survive its minutes without Jerome? The Utah game said yes to the first question for Memphis and left the second one open. Golden State gets a game in Los Angeles to work out its own answers first.
