TLDR: Opening night in the Southeast Division gives the Hawks a trip to Kia Center, where they'll face a Magic team that won its preseason finale and still came out of it with an injury problem. Before Atlanta even gets on the plane, the story is who Orlando can actually put on the floor.

WED 10/21, 7:00 PM

Atlanta opens its season at Orlando after a 4-1 preseason with a rebuilt wing group around Dort, Finney-Smith and McCollum. The Magic are home favorites, but Franz Wagner's shoulder is day-to-day, Noah Penda is out with a torn hamstring, and 3 more rotation players carry day-to-day tags. Atlanta is thin at center behind Landale, with Henri Veesaar out for the year. Wagner's status is the biggest unknown going into Wednesday.

Atlanta Hawks
  • Won 4 straight to close the preseason
  • New wing defenders Dort and Finney-Smith
  • Orlando's wing depth hit by injuries
  • Veesaar lost for the season, center depth thin
  • Gueye coming back from foot surgery
  • Several new rotation pieces in their first real game
Orlando Magic
  • Home opener at Kia Center
  • Rolled Miami by 21 in the preseason finale
  • Wagner stayed on the bench, hopeful for opener

This is Game 1 for both clubs on Wednesday, October 21, with tipoff at 7:00 PM ET in Orlando. Atlanta had the better October. Quin Snyder's group went 4-1 in the preseason, lost the opener to Memphis, then won 4 straight, including a 113-110 win over Oklahoma City and a 135-111 rout of Dallas. Preseason scores don't count, but a team with this many new faces needed those reps.

And there are a lot of new faces. The Hawks traded for Luguentz Dort and Ryan Nembhard, brought in Dorian Finney-Smith, and re-signed CJ McCollum and Jock Landale. Zaccharie Risacher went to Dallas, and Jonathan Kuminga left in free agency. The roster now leans on defense and physicality on the wing. Orlando goes into the opener as a modest home favorite.

The Magic's preseason ended with a 136-115 win over Miami, and that game is also where the worry started. Franz Wagner opened the third quarter, left with right shoulder soreness and didn't return. Sean Sweeney would only say Wagner will be re-evaluated. Wagner did stay on the bench with his teammates afterward, which is a decent sign for Wednesday. Day-to-day is still a long way from cleared.

The Wagner news isn't Orlando's only problem. Noah Penda has a partially torn right hamstring. Izaiyah Nelson is still about a month away after offseason ankle surgery, according to Jeff Weltman. Anthony Black (ankle), Jonathan Isaac (knee) and Jase Richardson (back) are all listed day-to-day. Orlando's identity is length and versatility on the wing, so this list hits the part of the rotation that defines them. If Wagner sits, the Magic open the season with their depth already used up.

Atlanta has its own frontcourt issue. Rookie center Henri Veesaar tore his right ACL and is expected to miss the 2026-27 season. Mouhamed Gueye is coming back from surgery on a fractured left foot. That means a lot of the work behind the starting bigs falls to Landale. The Hawks' wing additions can help cover it, but on the glass against a long Orlando team, Atlanta is thinner than it would like. This one is mostly decided by Wagner's shoulder, and by Wednesday we'll know which Magic team the Hawks are getting.
