TLDR: Two of the most beaten-up rosters in the East meet Wednesday, November 4 at Capital One Arena. Washington has been finding ways to win shorthanded, and Atlanta is still waiting on its best player's ankle.

Washington (4-3) hosts Atlanta (3-4) with both teams missing a big chunk of their rotations. Sarr and Beekman are out for the Wizards, and Jalen Johnson's sprained ankle is the main question for the Hawks. Washington has been winning low-scoring games with defense, while Atlanta has been giving up 120-plus in its losses, so pace and Johnson's status should decide it.

Atlanta Hawks
  • Johnson's 18.1/9.0/7.9 line if the ankle lets him play
  • Took down Cleveland 114-111 in the last 5
  • Allowed 120-plus in all 4 recent losses
  • Johnson, Landale, Gueye, Veesaar out; Flemings suspended Monday
  • Frontcourt left very thin by injuries
Washington Wizards
  • Held Charlotte to 79 and Orlando to 94
  • Won the Orlando 3rd quarter 19-9 after a tied half
  • Has kept winning without Sarr, Gill, Vukcevic

Start with Jalen Johnson, because the Hawks do. He sprained his left ankle in the 3rd quarter of the 121-99 loss in New Orleans and didn't return, then got downgraded to out for Monday against Indiana. He's averaging 18.1 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.9 assists, so Atlanta's offense runs through him in every way that counts. Without him there's no obvious second creator to hand it to. Whether he plays Wednesday is the biggest open question on this game.

The rest of Atlanta's list doesn't help. Kingston Flemings sat Monday on a suspension. Jock Landale has a bad hip, Mouhamed Gueye is out after surgery on a fractured left foot, and Henri Veesaar's torn ACL ends his 2026-27 season. That leaves the frontcourt thin, so whoever's left at center is going to play big minutes. There's no betting board up yet, so none of this has been priced.

Washington's list is just as long. Alex Sarr missed the Orlando game with a knee injury, Reece Beekman hurt his right AC joint and gets re-evaluated in about 3 weeks, and Anthony Gill (back), Tristan Vukcevic (hip), Justin Champagnie (foot) and Jamir Watkins (ACL) are all out too. The Wizards have been grinding out wins anyway.

Our recap of that Orlando game shows how they're doing it. Washington won 103-94 at Kia Center without Sarr, Gill or Vukcevic. It was tied at halftime, then the Wizards took the 3rd quarter 19-9. Before that they held Charlotte to 79 in a 95-79 home win. Those were 2 straight wins on defense, against a Magic team on the 2nd night of a back-to-back and missing Paolo Banchero, Jalen Suggs and Anthony Black. That's a soft spot, but the Wizards still had to win it.

Atlanta's defense has been heading the other way. Through the Pelicans game, the Hawks had lost 4 of their last 5 and allowed 120 or more in all 4 of those losses, including 2 straight to Houston and 129 to Miami. The win in that stretch was a 114-111 game against Cleveland. Atlanta also played Indiana on Monday, so check that result before Wednesday.

So it's a 4-3 team against a 3-4 team, and both coaches are going deep into the rotation. Washington is set up to slow the game down and make it ugly, which is how it beat Orlando. Atlanta wants to push the pace, which only really works with Johnson handling the ball. Tipoff is 7:00 PM ET.
