TLDR: Two games in, the Miami Heat have given up 131 and 128 points and still haven't won with Giannis Antetokounmpo. They get a Charlotte Hornets team that just lost its home opener by 47, which makes Saturday a test of which bad start is closer to the truth.

The 0-2 Heat visit the 1-1 Hornets on the second night of a back-to-back for both teams. Miami has a working offense around Giannis Antetokounmpo and a defense that has given up 131 and 128. Charlotte is still without much of its backcourt, and Kon Knueppel's possible return from a hamstring strain is the biggest unknown left before tipoff.

Miami Heat
  • Giannis opened with 35 on 13-of-19 shooting
  • Charlotte backcourt missing White and possibly Knueppel
  • Allowed 131 and 128 in 2 games
  • Road leg of a back-to-back
  • Detroit dropped 41 on them in a quarter
Charlotte Hornets
  • Knueppel's strain looks mild, could return Saturday
  • Won in Brooklyn without Knueppel or White
  • Home building, Heat traveling on short rest
  • Scored 81 in home opener, never topped 23 a quarter
  • Coby White's calf has no return timeline
  • Shot 31% from three in their 1 win

Antetokounmpo's Heat debut was about as good as it could be for him and as bad as it could be for the team. He scored 35 on 13-of-19 shooting and Minnesota won by 25 anyway. Then Detroit put up 41 in the 1st quarter, led by 23 after 3 and won 128-111 in Miami. The offense has a centerpiece. The defense hasn't shown up in either game, and in 2 home games the Heat have been beaten by a combined 42 points.

Charlotte's problem is simpler, and it's harder to fix. Coby White (calf), Kon Knueppel (hamstring), Grant Williams (hamstring) and Kylan Boswell (knee) all sat out the Atlanta game, and the Hornets didn't score more than 23 in any quarter of an 81-128 home-opener loss. Dennis Schroder and Christian Anderson Jr. have been running the backcourt. The market has Miami as a road favorite at 0-2, which shows how much it thinks those absences matter.

The Knueppel news is the one to watch before tipoff. Last Word On Basketball reported his strain looks mild and called Saturday against Miami his next chance to play. White's calf is the bigger worry, because it fits a long history of calf trouble and nobody has put a return date on it. Charlotte did win on opening night in Brooklyn, 110-103, while shooting 31% on 48 threes without Knueppel. That game showed the team can grind out a win and also showed exactly what his shooting is worth to them.

There's a schedule quirk too. Both teams played Friday night, so this is the second night of a back-to-back for each, and Miami had to travel for it. That's not ideal for a Heat defense that has looked a step slow even with rest. Charlotte is in its own building, but there won't be much rest for anyone.

Tipoff at Spectrum Center is 6:00 PM ET. If the Heat are the team the offseason was built around, this is the night they should prove it against a thin roster. If the defense that let Detroit score 41 in a quarter shows up again, even a short-handed Hornets team can score enough to make it uncomfortable. The status of 1 Charlotte hamstring could matter more than anything else on the injury report.
