TLDR: Giannis Antetokounmpo's first trip to Los Angeles as a member of the Heat lands Monday, November 2, against a Lakers team led by the NBA's leading scorer. Miami spent the first week of the season figuring out what it has, and the answer has only recently started to look good.

Miami, still working out the Antetokounmpo-Adebayo partnership, had won 2 straight as of Saturday after an 0-4 start. It visits a Lakers team that started 4-1 behind Luka Dončić, the league's leading scorer. LA plays Golden State and Toronto first, which puts this game on the 2nd night of a back-to-back, a week after Dončić sat with back tightness. No board is posted yet.

Miami Heat
  • Giannis-Bam pairing finally producing: 24 points each vs Atlanta
  • Scored 109 after the 1st quarter vs Indiana
  • Rested legs: no game between this and Indiana
  • Lost the first 4 games of the season
  • Win over Pacers came vs only 11 bodies
  • Gave up 128 to Detroit, 42 in one quarter to Indiana
Los Angeles Lakers
  • Dončić leading NBA at 36.0 points per game
  • Won 103-87 over the Clippers without Dončić
  • Beat Golden State by 22 in the opener
  • 2nd night of a back-to-back after Toronto
  • Dončić back tightness a week ago
  • Kessler playing in a finger splint against Giannis and Bam

Miami's start was rough. The Heat lost their first 4 games after the July trade that brought Antetokounmpo over from Milwaukee, and a 4-time All-Star was already saying publicly that Bam Adebayo needed to change his game because this is Giannis' team now. Then the Heat beat the Hawks 129-117 on the road, with Antetokounmpo posting 24 points and 18 rebounds and Adebayo adding 24 of his own. Adebayo also passed Udonis Haslem that night to become the franchise's career leader in rebounds.

They followed it with the best game of their season. Indiana put up 42 in the 1st quarter, and Miami outscored the Pacers 109-83 the rest of the way to win 145-125 in the NBA Cup opener. Antetokounmpo had a triple-double and Adebayo scored 27. That comes with a caveat: Indiana had only 11 available players and its rotation fell apart after the 1st quarter. As of Saturday, Miami has won 2 straight and sits at 2-4. Its next game is this one, so the Heat get a few days off before flying west.

The Lakers come in with a busier schedule. They played Golden State at Chase Center on Friday in their own NBA Cup opener and host Toronto on Sunday. That makes Monday the 2nd night of a back-to-back, and both of those results will shape this game before tipoff. No betting board is posted for this one yet. It opens once Miami is the next game on both schedules.

Luka Dončić is the reason LA was 4-1 heading into the Warriors game. He was leading the league at 36.0 points per game through 4 games, including 52 against Utah, 41 against Portland and 28 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists in a 127-105 opening-night win over Golden State. He also sat out the 103-87 win over the Clippers with back tightness. JJ Redick called it precautionary, and Dončić was left off the injury report for Friday's game. Still, a back that tightened up a week ago and a back-to-back on Sunday and Monday is worth keeping an eye on.

The rest of LA's injury list is mostly depth. Ziaire Williams has been dealing with a left foot and heel issue, Adou Thiero and Cameron Carr have been ruled out, and Walker Kessler is playing with a splint on his left finger. Kessler matters most for this matchup. He's the big man who has to deal with Antetokounmpo attacking the rim and Adebayo working the elbows, and a center playing with a hurt hand against that frontcourt could be in for a long night.

The basketball question is simple. Miami's 145-point win over a short-handed Indiana team doesn't prove much, but the Antetokounmpo-Adebayo partnership has finally started producing. The Lakers have the best scorer in the league right now and a home crowd. They'll also have played 2 games in 4 days by the time Miami shows up. Tipoff at crypto.com Arena is 7:00 PM PT.
