TLDR: Dallas has beaten 2 unbeaten teams in a row. Sacramento hasn't beaten anybody yet. Monday, November 2 at the American Airlines Center tells us whether the Kings can make this one a game.

The Mavericks are 4-2 and have won 3 straight, including back-to-back wins over teams that hadn't lost yet, behind Cooper Flagg and a resurgent Kyrie Irving. The Kings are winless through 5 with a game in Memphis still to play first, and they're missing both of their centers and Keegan Murray. Their defense has allowed 121 or more every night. The question is whether Sacramento's scoring, led by Darius Acuff Jr., can cover for that defense and its turnovers against a Dallas team short on backup ball-handlers.

Sacramento Kings
  • Acuff scored 34 at New Orleans
  • Scored 120 in 2 of the last 3 games
  • Dallas playmaking thin with de Larrea out
  • Allowed 121-plus in all 5 games
  • 25 turnovers, bench outscored 41-8 at New Orleans
  • Cardwell, Raynaud, Murray and Simmons all out
Dallas Mavericks
  • Flagg and Irving combined for 65 vs Houston
  • Won the 4th quarter 40-27 over the Rockets
  • Beat unbeaten OKC and Houston back to back
  • Lively and Aldama out, frontcourt thinned
  • Clayton turned it over 3 times late vs Houston
  • Irving still managing minutes after ACL tear

Start with the hosts, because they're the ones playing like they mean it. In their last 2 games the Mavericks handed Oklahoma City its first loss of the year, 120-96, and then did the same to Houston, 116-111. Against the Rockets, Dallas went into the 4th down 8 and won the quarter 40-27. Cooper Flagg scored 32 on 13-of-19 and Kyrie Irving added 33 on 12-of-19. Irving has spent October managing his minutes after the ACL tear, and the Houston game was the first one where he looked like the old Kyrie: deep threes, pull-ups, and finishes nobody else in the league tries.

Sacramento has a different problem. As of this writing they're 0-5, and Heavy has already asked whether they can make a run at the worst start in NBA history. They also aren't done before this one. The Kings play in Memphis first, against the same Grizzlies who won 123-112 in Sacramento last week. That result decides whether they show up in Dallas still looking for their first win or carrying one, and the minutes it costs a short rotation will matter 2 nights later.

Their most recent loss shows exactly what's wrong. In New Orleans, Darius Acuff Jr. scored 34 and the Kings still lost 132-120, because they turned it over 25 times and the Pelicans' bench outscored theirs 41-8. Jeremiah Fears had 22 points and a career-high 13 assists for New Orleans. Zion Williamson went 10-of-12, with every make in the paint. When one guard carries the scoring and the reserves give you 8, a hot night from Acuff isn't enough.

The defense is the real headline in Sacramento. The Kings have given up at least 121 points in all 5 games, and 130 or more in 2 of them. A big part of that is the frontcourt. Both centers, Dylan Cardwell (calf) and Maxime Raynaud (knee), are out and waiting on re-evaluations. Keegan Murray (ankle) is out 10 to 14 days, and Ben Simmons is done after Achilles surgery. That's a lot of size and defense gone from a team that needs both.

Dallas has its own injury list, just not one that's hurt it yet. Dereck Lively II (foot) and Santi Aldama (knee) have both been out, and Sergio de Larrea's knee has thinned out the ball-handlers. That showed against Houston when Walter Clayton Jr. turned it over 3 times in the last 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter against Marcus Smart. If the second unit gets loose with the ball, a team that has scored 112 or more 3 times in 5 games can hang around. The matchup to watch is whether Sacramento can do anything about Flagg and Irving in the 4th, since that's where Dallas has been winning games. Tip is 7:00 PM CT.
