TLDR: Sacramento has started 0-4 and has given up 121 or more in every one of those games. Thursday it visits a Pelicans team that has taken 3 good teams to the wire and still hasn't won.

The 0-4 Kings visit the Pelicans on Thursday without Keegan Murray, Ben Simmons and 2 of their centers, after allowing 121 or more in every game so far. New Orleans has played close games against Indiana, Utah and Denver and lost all 3, and it hosts Denver again the night before. Rest favors Sacramento, and both depleted frontcourts point to a high-scoring game. The board isn't open while the Pelicans still have a game to play first.

Sacramento Kings
  • Rested: Wednesday off while New Orleans plays Denver
  • Offense has reached 112-plus twice despite injuries
  • Allowed 121 or more in all 4 games
  • No Murray, no Cardwell, no Raynaud up front
  • Every loss by 8 points or more
New Orleans Pelicans
  • Has scored 119 or more in every game
  • Trey Murphy scored 26 in the Denver loss
  • Losses by 3, 1 and 6 in OT

The Kings' problem is easy to spot. They've lost all 4 games by 8 points or more, and the San Antonio loss that dropped them to 0-4 was over by halftime. The Spurs won the first 2 quarters by a combined 26 points and coasted 130-103. Sacramento's offense has scored 112 and 120 in two of the losses, so scoring isn't really the issue. The issue is that they can't get stops.

Much of that comes from who is missing. Keegan Murray is out with an ankle injury and will be re-evaluated in 10-to-14 days. Both Dylan Cardwell (calf) and Maxime Raynaud (knee) are out, which leaves Sacramento without 2 centers. Ben Simmons is done after surgery on a torn right Achilles. That's a thin frontcourt going up against a New Orleans team that has hung 120, 119 and 135 on its first 3 opponents. No line is up on this one yet.

New Orleans hasn't had the Kings' blowouts. It has had near-misses. As of Tuesday the Pelicans were 0-3, losing by 3 to Indiana and by 1 at Utah. In Denver they blew a 23-point lead and lost 141-135 in overtime while Nikola Jokic put up 35, 15 and 10. Trey Murphy led them with 26 that night. The offense is clearly working. Closing out games is the open question.

The Pelicans have one game left before this. They host Denver on Wednesday in a rematch of that overtime game, and it settles two things. First, whether New Orleans is still winless when Sacramento arrives. Second, how much the Pelicans have left in their legs. This game is the second night of a back-to-back for New Orleans. The Kings' last game was Tuesday in San Antonio, so they get Wednesday off and only a short trip east.

New Orleans has its own hole in the middle. Yves Missi has a left knee bone bruise and is listed as out for an extended stretch. Jordan Poole was day-to-day with an illness heading into the Denver game. Both teams are short on bigs and both defenses have leaked points, so expect a fast game that turns on who defends the paint better. Tipoff is 7:00 PM CT at the Smoothie King Center.
