TLDR: Sacramento ends its preseason Friday, October 16 at the Frost Bank Center, and both of its centers are hurt. Waiting there is Victor Wembanyama, if the Spurs decide to play him.

SAT 10/17, 7:00 PM

Sacramento closes its preseason in San Antonio with both of its centers, Dylan Cardwell and Maxime Raynaud, injured, and its regulars rested in a 110-98 home loss to Portland. The Spurs have lost all 3 of their preseason games and play Phoenix 2 nights before this one, so who plays matters more than the result. If Wembanyama plays, he gets a matchup against a Kings frontcourt that may be little more than Sabonis.

Sacramento Kings
  • Preseason finale, so regulars likely to get longer run
  • Sabonis can run the offense from the elbow if he plays
  • Cardwell and Raynaud both out, no backup center
  • Trailed Portland 66-39 at half with regulars resting
San Antonio Spurs
  • Wembanyama had 6 assists against Phoenix
  • Home floor against a thin Kings frontcourt
  • Lost all 3 preseason games through Monday
  • Fox undisclosed, Harris calf, Quaintance not cleared
  • Hosts Phoenix 2 nights earlier, so some may rest

Neither team's record counts yet, so the most useful thing to watch Friday is who actually plays. The Kings' recap from Tuesday says it plainly: Portland led 66-39 at halftime at Golden 1 Center while Sacramento sat Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, De'Andre Hunter, Ben Simmons and Darius Acuff Jr. Sacramento won the 4th quarter by 15 in garbage time and lost 110-98. On the schedule the Kings released, this trip to San Antonio is their last preseason game. That makes it the most likely place to see the regular rotation together, but nobody has said so.

The center spot is the real problem. Dylan Cardwell is out at least 2 weeks with a left calf strain, and Maxime Raynaud will be re-evaluated in about 2 weeks after a right knee subluxation. Sabonis was listed with an undisclosed issue when he sat against Portland. If he plays Friday, he is the Kings' frontcourt almost by himself. If he doesn't, Sacramento has nobody of real size to put on Wembanyama.

San Antonio still has a game to play first. The Spurs host Phoenix on Wednesday, and how many starters play there will help decide who is available 2 nights later. The preseason has been rough so far. San Antonio opened with a 123-116 loss to Atlanta, lost 102-98 to the Suns and then lost 119-109 to Utah on Monday, when Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Devin Vassell all got planned rest. The team called that routine maintenance, not an injury concern.

When Wembanyama has played this month, he has been running more of the offense. He had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks in 22 minutes against Phoenix, though he went 0-for-5 from 3. That passing is the part worth watching against a Kings team with no healthy true center. De'Aaron Fox has missed time with an undisclosed issue, Tobias Harris is coming back slowly from a calf injury, and Jayden Quaintance has not been cleared for basketball activities, so the Spurs' depth is also thinner than it looks.

Tipoff is 7:00 PM CT. The final score won't tell you much. What's worth watching is how long Sacramento's regulars play in their last tune-up and how the Spurs split minutes after facing Phoenix. If both teams play their starters, a Kings team without a healthy center against Wembanyama is the best matchup of the night.
