TLDR: The Knicks open their preseason Monday in Philadelphia, and the team waiting for them has LeBron James, Jaylen Brown and a Joel Embiid with no restrictions. Nobody gets graded on an exhibition, but this is the first real look at a Sixers roster that changed shape over the summer.

The Knicks open their preseason at Philadelphia against a Sixers team that added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown and has Joel Embiid healthy and unrestricted to start camp. Both coaches plan to go light on their starters, so the night is mostly about rotations: Philly's crowded new backcourt and wing group, and New York's center depth after Mitchell Robinson's exit. Both teams are also thin at backup center, with Tacko Fall and Adem Bona hurt for the Sixers. No betting lines have been posted yet.

New York Knicks
  • Drummond adds a corner three to elite offensive rebounding
  • Mike Brown says the camp roster is in good shape
  • Center depth thin with Mitchell Robinson gone
  • Starters slated for light preseason workloads
  • Towns extension talks stalled, a lingering distraction
Philadelphia 76ers
  • Embiid fully cleared and practicing without restrictions
  • LeBron and Jaylen Brown deepen the top of the rotation
  • Deep guard group: Maxey, Simons, Edgecombe, Caldwell-Pope
  • Tacko Fall out at least 2 weeks, hip strain
  • Adem Bona's foot still being re-evaluated
  • LeBron and Embiid workloads being actively managed

Start in Philly, because that's where the noise is. The Sixers spent the summer adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, plus Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Anfernee Simons, and they brought 21 players to camp in Camden. The biggest news there might not even be a new face. Embiid opened camp without restrictions after playing fewer than 40 games in each of the last 3 seasons. Nick Nurse said he "looked great", and he went full speed in each of the first 3 practices.

The Knicks come in with a different question: who plays center. Mitchell Robinson is gone, so Andre Drummond moves up as the backup big, and he showed up with a corner three to go with his rebounding. Tony Bradley, Drew Eubanks and James Wiseman are fighting over whatever frontcourt minutes are left. Philly has holes in the middle too. Tacko Fall has a left hip strain that will keep him out at least 2 weeks, and Adem Bona's foot is due for another look in a couple of days. That makes a Knicks-Sixers exhibition a rough night to be a backup center on either side.

Nobody has posted a number for this one yet, and that fits a preseason opener 3 days out with both coaches still deciding who plays. Mike Brown has already said his starters will carry a fairly light load for most of the preseason. Philadelphia is still working out how to manage Embiid's and LeBron's minutes through the exhibitions and on back-to-backs. Expect a short first half from the names you know and a long second half from the names you don't.

The Knicks have some business of their own to sort out. Karl-Anthony Towns wants an extension, and talks have reportedly stalled over a real gap in what each side thinks he's worth. That won't decide a preseason game, but it will follow Towns into every press scrum this month. Landry Shamet got paid this summer, 4 years and $24 million after 2 straight camps on non-guaranteed deals, and now he gets his first run with that security. New York also cut John Konchar and N'Daly Fante on day 2, so the roster is already getting smaller.

So what's worth watching on Monday? Mostly the shape of Philly's new rotation: who brings the ball up when Maxey, Brown, Simons and VJ Edgecombe share the floor, and how much LeBron actually plays in the first one. For New York, watch whether Brown's new offense looks as different as advertised and whether Drummond can hold up as a real backup 5. Tip is 7:00 PM ET at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Both teams start at 0-0 and plan to stay careful.
