TLDR: The Lakers turned over most of their roster this summer, and on Monday, October 5 the new group plays its first game together at Golden 1 Center. It's preseason and nothing counts, but for a team that barely knows itself yet, this is the first real look.

The Lakers start their preseason in Sacramento with a roster that returns less of last year's minutes than any team in the league. Doncic, Reaves and Kessler are set, and the last 2 starting spots plus Dalton Knecht's role are the open questions. The Kings' storyline is a healthy Ben Simmons, and with the Lakers at Golden State the next night, how long the starters play matters more than who wins.

Los Angeles Lakers
  • Doncic, Reaves, Kessler core set as starters
  • Open spots mean bench players auditioning hard
  • Only 8 returners, league-low 42% of minutes back
  • Back-to-back at Golden State next night
  • 2 starting spots still unsettled
Sacramento Kings
  • Simmons healthy, no limitations entering camp
  • Christie publicly high on Simmons in camp
  • Opener at Golden 1 Center
  • 19-man camp roster, rotation still being sorted

There has been a lot of change in Los Angeles. Only 8 players are back from last year's roster, and that group played just 42% of the team's minutes, the lowest returning share in the league. Luka Doncic is still the headliner. Austin Reaves re-signed, and Walker Kessler came over in a sign-and-trade. Those 3 are considered locks to start, and the other 2 starting spots are open. Tipoff is 7:00 PM PT.

Sacramento comes in with a smaller story but a real one. Ben Simmons says he feels "great" and is in camp without limitations, and Doug Christie has had nothing but good things to say about him so far. A healthy Simmons running the floor against a Lakers team still learning each other's habits is the most interesting thing on the Kings' side of this game. No lines are posted yet, which makes sense for a preseason opener where nobody knows the minutes.

Those minutes are the real question. The Lakers fly straight to Golden State for another preseason game on Tuesday, October 6, so it's a back-to-back to open the exhibition slate. How much JJ Redick plays his starters in Sacramento, and how much he saves for the Warriors, decides what kind of game this is.

The more useful Lakers storyline is further down the roster. Rosters have to be set by October 19, and the 2 open starting spots plus the back end of the rotation are up for grabs. Dalton Knecht, now in his third year, is the name to watch. Redick hasn't said what role he sees for him, and reports have him as a possible odd man out in the roster crunch. A preseason opener is where a player in that spot either makes his case or doesn't.

For Sacramento, this is the first of 2 straight meetings with Los Angeles, with the rematch at the Lakers' place on October 8. The Kings have a 19-man camp roster and plenty of evaluating left to do, so expect a long rotation and a lot of names you won't see in April. The thing to track is whether Simmons' camp buzz shows up against another NBA team.

Don't read the final score as anything. Read the lineups instead: who Redick puts next to Doncic, Reaves and Kessler, and how much of the Kings' offense actually goes through Simmons.
