The biggest story in Memphis is how different the roster is. Jaren Jackson Jr. was moved to Utah in February, a deal that brought back Walter Clayton Jr. Ja Morant went to Portland, with Kris Murray in the return. Micah Peavy and Jordan Hawkins arrived from New Orleans. Memphis brought 21 players to camp, 3 of them on two-way deals, and still has 3 cuts to make. For a lot of the guys who play the second half on Wednesday, it'll be an audition.
Orlando's camp report is mostly guys working their way back. Anthony Black (ankle sprain) and Noah Penda (hamstring) have both been limited but are trending toward full work. Jonathan Isaac said he'd be limited in camp with his knee, and Izaiyah Nelson is about a month away after offseason ankle surgery. For a preseason opener that matters less than it sounds. The bigger effect is that minutes Sweeney might have spent on his wings go to the end of the bench instead.
On the Memphis side, the name to watch is Zach Edey. His ankle has been on the report since August, and the latest word is that he's on track for Opening Night. Whether that means a real run in October or a careful 10 minutes is up to the staff. Peavy turned his ankle at media day, and Kleiman said it'll be some time before the team gets a look at him. That hurts a guard on the bubble. Hawkins, a career 34.8% three-point shooter, and Murray are fighting for spots too, and Murray is pitching himself as the guy who does the dirty work.
After this one, Orlando goes to Cleveland on October 11, then finishes at home against the Cavaliers on October 13 and the Heat on October 16. Wednesday won't decide anything. What it can show you is what Sweeney's Magic want to look like, and whether Memphis's rebuilt roster has a shape yet.
