TLDR: Houston won the first game in Macao 135-117, and it was never close. On Sunday these two meet again, and Dallas may finally put Kyrie Irving on the floor with Cooper Flagg.

Houston beat a short-handed Dallas 135-117 in the first Macao game behind an Alperen Sengun triple-double. Sunday's rematch could be Kyrie Irving's first game back from his torn ACL and his first ever alongside Cooper Flagg, since he sat out the opener and his coach said he would play 1 of the 2 games. The Mavericks are still without Dereck Lively II in the middle, and Houston's starters are fully healthy.

Dallas Mavericks
  • Irving likely back after sitting the opener for rest
  • Flagg scored 19 even without his supporting cast
  • Lively out, no timeline after foot surgery
  • Aldama may be rested again after knee procedure
  • Thin frontcourt gave up a Sengun triple-double
Houston Rockets
  • No injuries listed, full projected starting 5 available
  • Sengun ran the offense from the post in Game 1
  • Won the 2nd quarter 38-26 on Friday

Game 1 was over at halftime. Houston won the 2nd quarter 38-26 and went into the break up 20. Alperen Sengun had a triple-double against a Dallas frontcourt that was missing Dereck Lively II, Santi Aldama and P.J. Washington. He did it in limited minutes, with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on 66.7 percent shooting. Cooper Flagg scored 19 for Dallas, which didn't come close to mattering.

The reason to watch Sunday is the guy who sat out Friday. Dusty May said before the trip that Irving would play in 1 of the 2 Macao games, and Irving was held out of the opener for rest. Nearly 19 months after tearing his left ACL, he has been cleared with no restrictions, and he has never played a game alongside Flagg, the reigning Rookie of the Year. Dallas still hasn't said which game it will be, so until it does, Sunday is a likely return and not a sure one.

Houston has nothing like that hanging over it. The Rockets have no injuries listed, and they started their projected first 5 in the opener: Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr., Sengun and Kevin Durant. What we don't know is how long Ime Udoka's starters play in a preseason game that tips at 5:00 AM CT. Once the regulars sit, a game like this turns into a look at the end of the bench.

The Dallas injury list is still the story. May said Lively is coming off December foot surgery and has no timeline to return, and Aldama could be rested as a precaution after a March knee procedure. Marcus Sasser (adductor) and Caleb Martin (illness) also missed Friday. That leaves Dallas thin at center against a Houston big man who just picked it apart from the high post. If Lively and Aldama sit again, Sengun gets the same open looks he had on Friday.

So you can watch Sunday for 2 things. One is Irving and Flagg sharing the floor for the first time, even if only for a few minutes. The other is whether a Dallas team with a real point guard back can keep Houston's starters from running away with it again. It's still preseason and the score doesn't count, but Dallas got embarrassed on Friday and will want a better showing in the rematch.
