TLDR: The Mavericks open the season on Wednesday, October 21, on the road in Houston. They're missing their big men, and the Rockets get their point guard back for real.

THU 10/22, 7:30 PM

Houston opens the season at home with Fred VanVleet back from a torn ACL and Steven Adams back from ankle surgery, while managing 38-year-old Kevin Durant's minutes. Dallas comes in missing Dereck Lively II and Santi Aldama, and 2 more rotation players are listed day-to-day. Whether the Mavericks' frontcourt is available is the biggest thing to watch for a game the board prices as a clear Rockets win.

Dallas Mavericks
  • Aldama progressing, coach says "much, much closer"
  • All 4 injured listed day-to-day, not out
  • Lively hasn't played since November 2025
  • No frontcourt depth to handle Adams on the glass
  • Biberovic and Howard also missed the preseason finale
Houston Rockets
  • VanVleet back and cleared as starting point guard
  • Adams cleared after January ankle surgery
  • Beat Dallas in the Macao preseason opener

This one already has some history. Dallas and Houston opened the preseason against each other in Macao, and the Rockets won the opener. Fred VanVleet, in his first NBA game in more than 500 days, ran the offense like he'd never left. Exhibition results don't count, but that one showed what each side brings into the opener. Houston has its floor general back. Dallas is still waiting on its frontcourt.

VanVleet's return from a torn ACL is the headline in Houston. He's been fully cleared and is back as the starting point guard. Steven Adams is cleared too after ankle surgery in January, so Houston gets its rebounding and screening center back. Kevin Durant also turned 38 on September 29 and is entering his 20th season. The staff has said plainly that it wants to cut his regular-season minutes, and an October opener is where that plan first meets a real game. The board has Houston as a clear favorite at home, which is no surprise given whose bodies are available.

On the Dallas side, the problem is in the paint. Dereck Lively II hasn't played since November 21, 2025, after surgery on his right foot, and he sat out the whole preseason. Santi Aldama had an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee in March while he was still in Memphis, and he hasn't played this preseason either. Coach Dusty May said Aldama is "getting much, much closer." That's encouraging, but it doesn't put him on the floor Wednesday.

The list goes deeper than those 2. Tarik Biberovic (right heel bursitis) and Jett Howard (illness) also missed the Hawks exhibition. That means Dallas could be thin on the wing as well as up front. Every one of the 4 is listed day-to-day, so things could change before tipoff. But if Lively and Aldama both sit, Dallas has to deal with Adams on the glass using whoever is left. That's a rough way to start a season.

For Houston, the questions are about fit, not health. How quickly do VanVleet and the rest of the rotation find their rhythm again? And how hard does the staff actually stick to Durant's minutes once a game gets tight in the 4th quarter? Tipoff is 7:30 PM CT at Toyota Center. It's a Texas opener with a clear story either way: a Rockets team that's finally whole against a Mavericks team trying to hold on until its bigs return.
