TLDR: Basketball is back on Tuesday, October 6, sort of. Brooklyn's first preseason game is in Charlotte, against a Hornets team that will spend it without the guard its whole plan is built around.

Brooklyn's preseason opener at Spectrum Center is a first look at a Nets roster built around Michael Porter Jr. and newcomer Julius Randle, with young guards like Nolan Traore fighting for minutes. Charlotte plays it without Kon Knueppel and Grant Williams, both out with hamstring injuries, so the Hornets' depth gets an early test. The 2 teams meet again October 21 in Brooklyn for the real opener.

Brooklyn Nets
  • Porter Jr. back after 24.7 points per game for Brooklyn
  • Randle adds a 2nd proven scorer to the frontcourt
  • Traore added size and strength over the summer
  • Mikel Brown Jr. not cleared for contact
  • New pieces have only had a week of camp together
Charlotte Hornets
  • Wing depth gets a full preseason audition
  • Roster built around shooting and depth
  • Knueppel out, missed all of camp with a hamstring injury
  • Grant Williams out for the entire preseason
  • PJ Hall still out after ankle surgery

Let's be clear about what this is. Nets at Hornets on Tuesday is the first of Brooklyn's 4 preseason games, not the real opener. That comes October 21 in Brooklyn, against these same Hornets. So the scoreboard doesn't matter much. What matters is who plays, how long they play, and which new pieces look like they belong.

On the Charlotte side, the story is Kon Knueppel's left hamstring. He hurt it coming end to end after a defensive rebound in a pickup game at the practice facility, missed all of camp in Charleston, and the team doesn't plan to re-evaluate him until the first week of the regular season. Grant Williams hurt his right hamstring too and will miss the whole preseason. Neither one plays Tuesday. That leaves a lot of minutes on the wing for guys trying to make the rotation, and the board for this one is still blank.

Brooklyn has more new faces to work in. Michael Porter Jr. is back after averaging 24.7 points for the Nets last season, and Julius Randle came over in the offseason and walked into camp as the biggest addition. A week of practice at HSS Training Center wraps Monday, October 5, so Tuesday is the first real look at those 2 sharing the floor.

For the Nets, the injury to watch is Mikel Brown Jr. He rolled his ankle the week before camp. Sean Marks said at the time they didn't expect him to miss much, but as of October 2 he still hadn't been cleared for contact and had no timetable, per the New York Post. Don't expect him on a preseason floor in Charlotte.

The young guys are the reason to tune in. Nolan Traore showed up to camp about an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier, and he's in the mix with Egor Dëmin and Danny Wolf for real minutes on a roster that suddenly has veterans in the way. NetsDaily's media day recap called some of the optimism around this team "delusional," and practice has already turned into a fight for spots.

Charlotte's hopeful version of the season is depth and shooting, and one local preview thinks the Hornets will surprise people. Without Knueppel, Williams or PJ Hall, Tuesday tests exactly that depth. Tip is 7:00 PM ET at Spectrum Center. Watch the rotations, not the score, and look at who's still out there late.
