TLDR: Utah jumped Denver in Boulder and never let go, so the Nuggets get a second look at the same opponent 2 days later, this time in Salt Lake. It's preseason and nobody keeps the trophy, but Denver didn't win a single quarter on Sunday and won't want to do that twice.

WED OCT 7, 7:00 PM

Utah beat Denver 109-97 in Sunday's preseason opener in Boulder, led by Markkanen, George and a healthy-looking Jaren Jackson Jr., while Jokic barely shot and Jamal Murray sat for personal reasons. The rematch in Salt Lake depends on whether Murray returns and how much Denver's starters push. Utah also has 3 rotation players listed day-to-day.

Denver Nuggets
  • Murray could return after missing the opener
  • Jokic took 1 shot in Boulder, so there's more to come
  • Strawther and Gordon both scored in double figures
  • Didn't win a single quarter in the opener
  • Spencer Jones still day-to-day with a hamstring
  • Second road-flavored game in 3 days
Utah Jazz
  • Markkanen, George and Jackson all scored well Sunday
  • Jackson's knee looked fine in real minutes
  • Bailey added weight and played well on both ends

Sunday's opener at CU Events Center went to Utah 109-97. The Jazz built a 10-point lead in the first quarter and held it the rest of the way. Lauri Markkanen led everybody with 17, Keyonte George added 15, and Jaren Jackson Jr. put up 11 in minutes that settled the questions about his knee. Will Hardy started George, Darryn Peterson, Markkanen, Jackson and Jusuf Nurkic, which is the clearest look yet at what Utah wants its first 5 to be.

Denver's side of that box score doesn't tell you much. Nikola Jokic handed out 7 assists and took 1 official shot, Julian Strawther led the team with 14 and Aaron Gordon had 12. Jamal Murray sat for personal reasons and Spencer Jones sat with a hamstring, so Tyus Jones handled a lot of the ball and finished with 6 assists. The Nuggets were trying out lineups more than they were trying to win a game in Boulder.

The biggest question for Tuesday is Murray. CBS reported that the personal matter isn't expected to affect his regular-season opener and that the trip to Utah is his next chance to play. If he suits up, the Jazz see something closer to Denver's real backcourt. If he doesn't, Tuesday probably looks a lot like Sunday.

Utah's injury report from the opener is worth a second look. Josh Green (knee), Brice Sensabaugh (left hip) and Kyle Filipowski (lower back) all missed Sunday, which shortened Hardy's bench on the wings and in the frontcourt. Ace Bailey picked up some of those minutes. He came into camp 10-12 pounds heavier and gave Utah 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 stocks on 50 percent shooting in 20 minutes. Every one of those injuries is listed day-to-day, so the Jazz rotation in Salt Lake could change before tipoff.

For Utah, the real story is the young guards. Peterson is starting next to George, and the preseason is where Hardy finds out whether that pairing can hold up against a playoff team's starters. Denver gave them a soft test on Sunday, with Jokic barely looking at the rim. If Murray plays and Jokic decides to score, the Jazz get a much tougher one.

Tipoff at the Delta Center is 7:00 PM MT on Tuesday, October 6. There's nothing on the line and nobody will remember the score in November, but watch who closes the game for each team and how many minutes the stars get.
