TLDR: Denver and Phoenix both sit at 1-2 as of Tuesday, and neither one has looked settled. Friday night in Phoenix is a chance for one of them to steady itself, as long as the Nuggets get through New Orleans first.

Denver at Phoenix is a meeting of two 1-2 teams, and the Nuggets still have a game in New Orleans before it. Denver's second-half defense has been falling apart, and Phoenix is coming off Devin Booker's 3-point night in Oklahoma City. The game likely turns on whether the Suns' thin frontcourt, with Mark Williams out and Oso Ighodaro questionable, can do anything with Jokic, and on whether Denver can defend for 4 quarters.

Denver Nuggets
  • Jokic facing a Phoenix frontcourt without Mark Williams
  • Held Golden State to 28 in the first quarter
  • Hung 141 on New Orleans in its only win
  • Allowed 74 after halftime to the winless Warriors
  • Johnson and Diallo day-to-day, Strawther out for weeks
  • Plays at New Orleans first, so less rest
Phoenix Suns
  • Rested, with no game before this one
  • Green, Brooks and Bridges carried the scoring in Booker's off night
  • Beat Golden State 131-122 at home
  • Booker held to 3 points on 1-for-7 shooting
  • Thin at center: Williams out, Ighodaro dealing with an oblique
  • Lost by 41 in Portland

This is an early preview, and Denver still has a game to play before it. The Nuggets visit New Orleans first, and the last time these Nuggets saw the Pelicans it was a 141-135 shootout in Denver. Phoenix has nothing on its schedule before this one, so the Suns are a known quantity. Denver's form is still open: its record, its rest and the way it handles a road back-to-back stretch all depend on what happens in New Orleans.

Denver's defense is the story right now. In the 134-114 home loss to Golden State, the Nuggets held the Warriors to 28 points in the first quarter and then gave up 32, 40 and 34 in the next 3. That was 74 after halftime to a team that had not won a game yet. Nikola Jokic had 19 points and 11 assists and sat with 3:33 left and Denver down 21. DeMar DeRozan led the team with 21. Cameron Johnson (ankle) and Alpha Diallo (wrist) both missed that game, and both are listed day-to-day. Johnson's status is the one to watch this week, because he's a wing body Denver clearly needs on that end.

Phoenix's last game had its own problem: Devin Booker. He scored 3 points in 34 minutes in the 125-114 loss at Oklahoma City, going 1-for-7 from the floor. Outside a 2022 game he left injured, it was his lowest total since his rookie season. He did lead the team with 7 assists. Jalen Green (20), Dillon Brooks (19) and Miles Bridges (17) carried the scoring, and that came against a Thunder team without Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Cason Wallace.

These two have more in common than the matching records. Each lost to Oklahoma City, and each has been on the other end of the Golden State game: Phoenix beat the Warriors 131-122 at home, and Denver lost to them by 20. The Suns also have an 83-124 loss in Portland on their record. That gap is wider than anything Denver has lost by this season, and it's a reminder that Phoenix's bad nights have been really bad.

The matchup to watch is Jokic against Phoenix's frontcourt. Mark Williams is out long-term after labrum surgery, and Oso Ighodaro missed the Thunder game with an oblique injury. If Ighodaro is still out Friday, the Suns don't have many bodies to throw at the best passing big in the league. On the other side, Denver is still missing Julian Strawther (knee, re-evaluation in 6 weeks), and Spencer Jones (hamstring) has been reported as close to returning. Tipoff is 7:00 PM MT.
