TLDR: Miami needed 5 games to win once with Giannis Antetokounmpo in a Heat jersey. On Friday it gets an Indiana team down to the studs in the backcourt, which makes this the softest home date the Heat have had all season.

A 1-4 Miami team that just got its first win of the Giannis Antetokounmpo era hosts a 2-3 Indiana team without Tyrese Haliburton, T.J. McConnell or, so far, Ivica Zubac. The Pacers have faded late in back-to-back losses, and the Heat have struggled to defend all season, so it likely comes down to whether Indiana's thinned rotation can hold up into the 4th quarter. No board is posted yet.

Indiana Pacers
  • 2-1 on the road, 136 points at Brooklyn
  • 36-13 3rd quarter vs Philly shows the offense still works
  • Heat have allowed at least 113 every game
  • Haliburton out at least 2 weeks, hamstring
  • Lost the lead late in back-to-back games
  • Haliburton, McConnell, Sheppard, Furphy all out at guard
Miami Heat
  • Adebayo and Giannis took over in the Atlanta win
  • 7 double-digit scorers vs the Hawks
  • Indiana possibly without Zubac inside again
  • 0-3 at Kaseya Center this season
  • Allowed 131 and 128 in home losses
  • Fontecchio listed out with illness

The Heat's first week in the Giannis era went badly. They lost their first 4, and the home games were the ugly ones: 131 allowed to Minnesota and 128 to Detroit at Kaseya Center, then a 4-point loss to Dallas. Before the trip to Atlanta, Bam Adebayo said he felt like the team's "scapegoat." He answered that by leading the 129-117 win over the Hawks, a game with 7 Heat players in double figures and the first one this year where Miami didn't give away the 4th quarter.

Indiana's problems come from the trainer's room. Tyrese Haliburton played the first 4 games after missing all of last season with the Achilles tear from Game 7 of the 2025 Finals. He averaged 21.8 points and 9.5 assists over those 4 games, then strained his left hamstring. Rick Carlisle has him out at least 2 weeks and week-to-week after that. Ivica Zubac left Barclays Center on crutches with a sprained left ankle, and he has already missed 2 games.

The guard list is what makes this rough for Indiana. Haliburton, T.J. McConnell (hamstring), Ben Sheppard (meniscus surgery, out for months) and Johnny Furphy (torn ACL, out for the season) are all guards, and all of them are out. Carlisle says McConnell is "getting closer" but has given no date. Until one of them returns, the Pacers will have to run their offense through guys who weren't supposed to be handling the ball much in October.

The injuries are showing up late in games. Indiana lost to Milwaukee and then blew an 88-75 lead entering the 4th against Philadelphia, getting outscored 39-21 in the final quarter at home. Our recap of that game said they faded late for the second game in a row. A thin rotation tends to run out of legs in the 4th, and Miami spent 4 games losing exactly those minutes before it finally held on in Atlanta.

Watch the boards. Against Atlanta, Giannis piled up rebounds against a Hawks frontcourt missing 2 bigs. If Zubac sits again, Indiana brings the same weakness into Miami. The Heat are still a 1-4 team that has allowed at least 113 in every game, and the Pacers already have 2 road wins, including a 136-point night in Brooklyn. Indiana can still score with the guys it has left. The bigger question is whether those guys can stay with a full-strength Heat roster for 48 minutes. Tipoff is 8:00 PM ET.
