TLDR: Tyrese Haliburton's last meaningful game was Game 7 of the 2025 Finals, and it ended with a torn Achilles. His next 1 counts on Wednesday, October 21, at the Smoothie King Center, against a Pelicans team that won 26 games last year and believes it's healthier now.

Indiana opens its season in New Orleans, and it's Tyrese Haliburton's first regular-season game since he tore his Achilles in the 2025 Finals. The Pacers' rotation depends on how much Haliburton plays and on 3 day-to-day bench pieces. The Pelicans are relying on a slimmer Zion Williamson and second-year guard Jeremiah Fears, with Dejounte Murray's toe still unresolved. Indiana is the road favorite on the board.

Indiana Pacers
  • Haliburton back, 16 sharp minutes in preseason debut
  • 71-point first half vs Bucks in preseason finale
  • Siakam scored 24 in the finale
  • McConnell, Nesmith, Walker all day-to-day
  • Haliburton's workload after 472 days unknown
  • Furphy lost for season, thins wing depth
New Orleans Pelicans
  • Zion lighter, hitting shots, now shooting threes
  • Fears closed rookie year at 30 per game
  • Went 3-1 in preseason
  • Murray's toe leaves backcourt unsettled
  • No true defensive stopper in the core
  • Paint-heavy roster with spacing questions

This is Game 1 for both clubs, so there's no form to lean on. The question is which version of Indiana shows up. Haliburton missed all of last season after the Achilles tear. He came back in the preseason opener, a 123-112 win over Minnesota at Iowa State, his old college gym, with 7 points, 6 assists and 2 blocks in 16 minutes. That was a test drive, not a full workload. The bigger tell came in the preseason finale against Milwaukee. Pascal Siakam scored 24 and the Pacers put up 71 points in the first half, which looked like the offense that made the Finals.

The Pacers' depth is what to keep an eye on. T.J. McConnell and Jarace Walker both sat that Bucks finale with undisclosed issues, and Aaron Nesmith missed it with a hamstring. All 3 are listed day-to-day. Johnny Furphy is out for the year with a torn ACL. If Haliburton is still on any kind of minutes plan, McConnell is the guy who usually runs the second unit, so his status matters more than the day-to-day tag makes it sound. The Pelicans have a guard question too, and the board lists Indiana as the road favorite anyway.

New Orleans is coming off a 26-56 season and starts this one under Jamahl Mosley. Yahoo's preseason power rankings have them 27th and project 27.5 wins. The good news is Zion Williamson. His listed weight dropped from 284 to 277, he went 5-for-5 from the field in 18 minutes against Dallas, and he took 3 threes in 1 half against Washington. He attempted 4 all of last season. The Pelicans went 3-1 in the preseason and closed it with a 107-106 win over the Wizards.

Jeremiah Fears is the swing piece. The All-Rookie guard averaged 30 points on 60% true shooting over his final 6 games last year. Dejounte Murray sat the Wizards finale with a toe injury, so the starting backcourt spot Murray and Fears were competing for is still open. Murray missed most of last season after rupturing his Achilles, which makes 2 guards in this game coming back from that injury. If Murray can't go, the ball belongs to Fears, and that's not a bad outcome for New Orleans.

The matchup problem for New Orleans is the one every preview flagged. A lot of its core players score in the paint, and none of them is a real defensive stopper. That's a rough setup against a Haliburton-Siakam pick-and-roll that wants to run. Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones give Mosley some length on the wings. Derik Queen and Saddiq Bey add size and scoring. Bennedict Mathurin, who started his career in Indiana, gets the team that drafted him on opening night.

Tip is 7:00 PM CT. The only result that counts so far is a scoreline of 0-0. For Indiana, the scoreboard is secondary to Haliburton's minutes and whether the bench is healthy enough to cover for him. For New Orleans, the opener is a first look at whether a healthy Zion and a second-year Fears add up to more than the 26 wins they got last year.
