TLDR: Dallas gets back from Macao with 2 preseason games against Houston behind it, and Cooper Flagg will play his first game of the fall in front of the home crowd. The Pelicans come to town on Wednesday, October 14 with their starters still trying to find a lineup that works.

Dallas comes home from a split of 2 preseason games against Houston in Macao, still without Dereck Lively II, Santi Aldama, Marcus Sasser and Morez Johnson Jr., and Cooper Flagg's first home appearance is the headline. New Orleans is 1-1 in preseason after a comeback in Oklahoma City carried by its reserves and a loss in Miami. Its starting lineup is still unsettled, Jordan Poole is pushing for a start and Dejounte Murray is dealing with a toe injury. With no board posted, the game is about rotations more than results.

New Orleans Pelicans
  • Reserves rallied 18-0 to beat Oklahoma City
  • Jordan Poole sharp through 2 preseason games
  • Mathurin adds a new scoring option off the wing
  • Every starter -20 or worse in the opener
  • Gave up 128 in the Miami loss
  • Murray's toe kept him out against Miami
Dallas Mavericks
  • Won all 4 quarters in the 132-115 Macao win
  • Flagg scored 19 on 7-of-14 in his debut
  • 74 second-half points in the win
  • Lively, Aldama, Sasser, Johnson all sat Sunday
  • Win came against a Houston team missing its core
  • Fresh off a round trip to Macao

This is a preseason game, and nobody should treat it as a referendum on anything. It's still a useful look at both teams. Dallas lost the first Macao game 135-117 and then won the second 132-115, taking all 4 quarters and scoring 74 after halftime. Flagg scored 19 in the opener, 17 of them in the second quarter, on 7-of-14 shooting in about 19 minutes. Afterward Dusty May called his potential "through the roof."

There's an asterisk on that 17-point win. Houston played without Alperen Sengun, Fred VanVleet, Kevin Durant and Steven Adams, so Dallas beat a team missing most of its core. The Mavericks were shorthanded too. Dereck Lively II, Santi Aldama, Marcus Sasser and Morez Johnson Jr. all sat Sunday, which means Dallas has gone through the Macao trip without its starting center and a big chunk of its frontcourt depth.

New Orleans is in a stranger spot. The Pelicans won their opener at Oklahoma City 116-110, but the comeback came from the reserves, who went on an 18-0 run in the third quarter. Every member of the starting lineup finished at -20 or worse. Then they lost 128-118 in Miami. Zion Williamson had 11 points in the opener and new addition Benedict Mathurin had 13. What Jamahl Mosley does with his rotation for the 7:00 PM CT tip in Dallas is the main thing to watch.

Jordan Poole has given that decision some urgency. He played well enough in the first 2 preseason games that he's made a real case to start this one, and Dejounte Murray's toe, which kept him out of the Miami game, could open up a guard spot. If Poole starts in Dallas, it tells you more about how New Orleans plans to open the regular season than the final score will.

On the Dallas side, the watch is the frontcourt. The Mavericks have been playing a different style without Lively and Aldama, and Flagg has talked about an identity built to create more open 3s. If either big man is back for this one, it's the first look at what May's rotation is actually supposed to be. If not, it's another night of the young guys getting minutes. The Pelicans wrap their preseason at home against Washington 2 nights later.
