TLDR: It's a preseason game, so nothing counts on Wednesday, October 14 at Target Center. Still, it's the first chance to see Minnesota's new LaMelo Ball backcourt next to Anthony Edwards against a Pistons team that may finally get its big man back on the floor.

Detroit visits Minnesota for a preseason game, and the main question is who suits up. The Wolves' Ball-Edwards backcourt has looked good in limited minutes but sat out Saturday, and Minnesota plays the Knicks first. The Pistons could finally debut a newly extended Jalen Duren and get Cade Cunningham back after both sat in Washington.

Detroit Pistons
  • Duren could debut after his $200M extension
  • Beat Phoenix in the preseason opener
  • Cunningham and Duren both sat the Wizards game
  • Fell behind 40-20 in the first quarter in Washington
Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Ball and Edwards combined for 25 in the rout of Milwaukee
  • Edwards scored 19 in the first half against Indiana
  • Visit Knicks on October 12 before this game
  • Reserves gave away a halftime lead to Indiana
  • DiVincenzo still out with an Achilles injury

The Timberwolves have spent this preseason as a test of one big idea: can Ball and Edwards share the ball? The early answer is yes. Minnesota opened with a 116-97 win over Milwaukee in which the pair combined for 25 points. Ball needed 10 seconds to find Jonathan Kuminga for the first bucket of his Wolves career. Chris Finch has kept his rotation tight at 10 players, starting Ball, Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Kuminga and Jaden McDaniels.

Detroit's preseason has been more about who isn't playing. Jalen Duren missed the camp opener and signed a 5-year, $200 million deal. He then sat the first 2 exhibitions, with Paul Reed starting in his place. Cade Cunningham also sat the Wizards game for rest, and Daniss Jenkins took his spot. J.B. Bickerstaff has said the team will be careful with Duren as he goes from summer workouts to NBA games, and this trip to Minneapolis is his next chance to play.

The Pistons are 1-1 in exhibition play. They beat Phoenix, then lost 114-108 in Washington after falling behind 40-20 in the first quarter on 7-for-24 shooting. They rallied in the second half, but even in October, a 20-point first-quarter hole is a bad look for a team with real expectations.

Most of Minnesota's report is planned rest, not real injuries. Ball, Edwards, Gobert, Kuminga, McDaniels and Ayo Dosunmu all sat Saturday against Miami. The one long-term absence is Donte DiVincenzo, who is out with an Achilles injury and has said he's confident he'll return at some point this season. Minnesota also visits the Knicks on October 12 before this game. How many minutes the starters play at Madison Square Garden will decide how much of them Detroit sees 2 days later.

The Pacers game showed why preseason scores need an asterisk. Edwards scored 19 in the first half, and the regulars took a 65-61 lead into the break. Then the reserves took over and Minnesota lost 123-112. Expect the same here: the first 24 minutes tell you about the teams, and the last 24 tell you about the bench.

What to watch: whether Duren and Cunningham are both active, how Gobert and Duren handle each other inside if both play, and whether the Ball-Edwards pairing keeps sharing the ball against a Detroit defense that will compete harder than Milwaukee's did. Tipoff is 7:00 PM CT.
