TLDR: Two nights after Toronto beat a Knicks team in street clothes by 50, the same 2 clubs run it back at Madison Square Garden. It's preseason, but nobody in New York enjoys being 0-4 at anything.

THU 10/15, 7:30 PM

Toronto beat a Knicks team resting all 5 starters 148-98 on Tuesday, with Kawhi Leonard scoring 21 in 17 minutes in his return to the Raptors. Thursday's rematch at the Garden depends on whether New York plays its regulars and how much a thin Toronto frontcourt has left. The board isn't open on a preseason game, so this one is about rotations, not a number.

Toronto Raptors
  • Kawhi scored 21 in 17 minutes in his return
  • 5 players in double figures in Tuesday's rout
  • Bench depth carried Tuesday's 2nd half
  • Jemison and Battle sat Tuesday, undisclosed
  • Bittle still in a walking boot
  • Kawhi's minutes being kept limited
New York Knicks
  • Starting 5 rested Tuesday, fresh for Garden
  • Brunson-Towns core never faced Toronto's rotation
  • 0-4 this preseason
  • Backups gave up 86 points in a half

Tuesday's 148-98 result needs an asterisk the size of the Hudson. New York sat all 5 starters, and Toronto's group got up 86-47 by halftime and kept going. The Raptors shot 57% with 5 players in double figures. That tells you something about Toronto's depth and almost nothing about the Knicks team that will open the regular season.

The real story on Toronto's side is Kawhi Leonard. The Raptors got him back from the Clippers in a deal agreed June 30 that wasn't finalized until September 14, held up by the league's investigation into the Clippers' salary cap violations. He sat out the preseason game against the Clippers in Vancouver, then scored 21 in 17 first-half minutes in his return against the Knicks. Darko Rajaković said before that one that his minutes would be limited, so Thursday is more about getting him used to his teammates than about how many minutes he can handle.

For New York, the only question that matters is who suits up. The group that started the preseason opener was Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns. If that 5 plays real minutes at home, this is a different game from Tuesday's. If they sit again, the Knicks' backups get a second shot at a Raptors rotation that just beat them by 50.

Toronto's frontcourt is the thin spot. Trey Jemison III and Jamison Battle were both ruled out of Tuesday's game with undisclosed issues, and Nate Bittle is still in a walking boot with a follow-up appointment Wednesday that could get him out of it. Chucky Hepburn is gone too, waived with a hamstring issue. None of that slowed Toronto on Tuesday, but bigs are what usually run out first in a preseason game played at real speed.

Tipoff is 7:30 PM ET on Thursday, October 15. Whatever the scoreboard says, the details are what's worth watching: how Kawhi fits next to Toronto's ball handlers, whether Tom Thibodeau gives the Garden a look at Brunson and Towns before the games count, and whether a Knicks team that's 0-4 this preseason cares to answer a 50-point beating at home.
