TLDR: Toronto lands in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 1 without Kawhi Leonard. They have a 3-2 start that looks better on paper than it has on the floor lately, and they'll face a Lakers team that has scored in bunches all October.

Toronto comes to Los Angeles without Kawhi Leonard, who is out 3 to 4 weeks with a knee issue, and without center Nate Bittle. The Raptors are 1-2 since Leonard went down. The Lakers went into their October 30 trip to Golden State 4-1 and scoring about 123 a game behind Luka Dončić, with Walker Kessler protecting the rim. Toronto's ability to score inside against Kessler, and whether its home shooting travels, decides whether this is a game.

Toronto Raptors
  • Scored 135 and 129 in two home blowouts
  • Beat Orlando by 30 without Leonard
  • Leonard out 3-4 weeks with knee swelling
  • Bittle out, frontcourt thin against Kessler
  • Had 13 shots blocked in loss to Orlando
Los Angeles Lakers
  • Averaging about 123 points through 5 games
  • Kessler: 75% shooting, 2.4 blocks per game
  • Depth: Grimes and Sexton scored 44 without Dončić
  • Lost 136-129 to Portland on a back-to-back
  • Carr and Thiero out, Ziaire Williams questionable
  • Plays at Golden State first; result unknown

Toronto has had to remake itself for the next month. Leonard's left knee was first expected to cost him about a week, then Chris Haynes reported 3 to 4 weeks, so this is how the Raptors will look into late November. Without him they're 1-2. They lost by 23 in Minnesota on the night he was a late scratch, beat Orlando by 30, then lost to the Magic 2 days later in the same building.

That last loss is the one to worry about. A shorthanded Orlando team went 18-for-33 from 3, turned it over just 5 times, blocked 13 Toronto shots and led after every quarter. Nate Bittle is also out with a foot injury, so the Raptors' frontcourt is thin, and they're about to face one of the hottest rim protectors in the league this month.

Los Angeles has 1 more game to play before this one. The Lakers played at Golden State on October 30, a rematch of their 127-105 opening-night win, and that result will set the tone for Sunday. They went into it 4-1, averaging about 123 points a game, with Luka Dončić putting up numbers like his 41 against Portland.

Dončić is the headline, but Walker Kessler might be the bigger problem for Toronto. He's averaging 14.8 points on 75% shooting with 8.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game. A Raptors team that just had 13 shots blocked by Orlando now gets a center who lives at the rim, and Toronto's best help-side big is in a walking boot. Los Angeles also doesn't need everything from Luka. Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton combined for 44 in the win over the Clippers that Dončić missed.

Toronto's best case is the team that scored 135 on Chicago and 129 on Orlando at home. When the ball moves, this roster can score without Leonard. The trouble is the road. Their road games so far are a 10-point win in Washington and a 23-point loss in Minneapolis. Now they play the front end of a trip out west against a team that has been almost unbeatable at the start of games.

The Lakers have injuries of their own. Cameron Carr (oblique) and Adou Thiero (knee) were out for the Warriors game, and Ziaire Williams (foot) was questionable. None of them is Leonard, though. For Toronto to steal one at crypto.com Arena, they need a big shooting night and some way to keep Kessler from turning the paint into a no-fly zone. Tipoff is 6:00 PM PT.
