TLDR: The first basketball that looks real comes from Macao, not Dallas or Houston. The Rockets and Mavericks open their preseasons at the Venetian Arena on Friday, October 9, the first of 2 NBA China Games between the Texas rivals.

Houston and Dallas open their preseasons with the first of 2 games in Macao. The Rockets bring a set starting five and VanVleet's return from a lost season. The Mavericks bring Kyrie Irving's comeback, Cooper Flagg's second year and a frontcourt with 3 forwards and centers listed day-to-day. Dusty May has called it a fact-finding mission, so the storylines matter more than the score.

Houston Rockets
  • Starting five already set by Udoka
  • Sengun faces thinned Dallas frontcourt
  • Athleticism and switching May expects to test Dallas
  • VanVleet's first real action after missing a full season
  • Udoka limiting VanVleet's workload
Dallas Mavericks
  • Flagg back after Rookie of the Year season
  • Irving returns as a 2nd creator
  • Lively, Aldama, Johnson all day-to-day
  • May openly says winning isn't the objective
  • Irving-Flagg pairing has never played together

For Dallas, the reason to watch is a pairing that hasn't played together yet. Kyrie Irving is coming back from the ACL tear that ended his season, and Cooper Flagg is starting his second year after winning Rookie of the Year on 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists a night. Friday is the first look at the two of them sharing a floor, and how the ball gets split between a 34-year-old shot-maker and a 19-year-old who already runs the offense is the main thing the Mavericks need to learn in October.

Houston arrives with a much more settled group. Ime Udoka's obvious starting five is Fred VanVleet, Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun, and the biggest name on that list is the point guard. VanVleet missed all of 2025-26, and the Dream Shake's camp reporting says that absence played a major role in the Rockets' struggles. Udoka says he is making good progress but doesn't expect him to play back-to-backs. Neither club has a number posted on the board yet.

Dusty May isn't treating this one as a game to win. Asked about Houston, the Mavericks coach said the Rockets are "going to expose some things because of the way they play and how hard they play and their athleticism and their switchability," and called the trip "a fact-finding mission" where winning "is not going to be the primary objective." Coaches say that every preseason, but May named exactly the parts of his roster he expects Houston to test.

Those injury notes all fall in the same spot. Dereck Lively II is still working back from his foot injury, though Masai Ujiri says he's making good progress. Santi Aldama was limited in practice with an undisclosed issue, and Morez Johnson Jr. has been limited by lower-leg soreness. All 3 are day-to-day, all 3 are frontcourt players, and the opponent is Sengun. Even in an exhibition, Dallas could end up giving the Houston center's minutes to whoever is healthy enough to play.

Tip is 7:00 AM CT, so this is a coffee game for anyone stateside. Watch for 3 things: how much Irving plays and how sharp he looks, whether VanVleet looks like the point guard Houston has been missing, and what Dallas does at center. The same 2 teams meet again Sunday, October 11, in the same building, so neither coach has a reason to show much the first night.
