TLDR: Minnesota's last tuneup before the games count is Friday, October 16, at the United Center. The Wolves are coming off a 22-point home beating by Detroit, and the Bulls haven't had a healthy center all month.

Minnesota plays its preseason finale in Chicago, 5 days before opening the season against Miami, after Detroit ran away from a thin Wolves front line in a 128-106 game. The Bulls have leaned on rookies Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain this preseason while playing without Nic Claxton, Zach Collins and, lately, Tobe Awaka. Neither team is deep at center, so rebounding and how long the starters play will matter more than the score.

Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Edwards and Ball already clicking as a pairing
  • Kuminga scored 16 in his return against Detroit
  • Opened the preseason with a 19-point road win
  • Detroit outscored them 36-20 in the 2nd quarter
  • Zikarsky and Freeman out, front line thin
  • Starters' minutes likely capped before the October 21 opener
Chicago Bulls
  • Caleb Wilson averaging high scoring nights as a rookie
  • Awaka gave them 6 offensive boards in 21 minutes
  • Led Milwaukee by 23 at the half
  • Claxton out the rest of the preseason
  • Collins, Awaka and Okoro all day-to-day
  • The Milwaukee win came against benched starters

This is a preseason game, and nobody should treat it as anything else. The Wolves have one exhibition left, this one in Chicago, before they open the season against Miami on October 21. What makes it worth watching is the backcourt Minnesota will carry into that opener. Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball combined for 25 in a 116-97 preseason-opening win at Milwaukee, and Friday is the last chance to see that pairing against somebody else before the Heat get a look.

The Detroit game is the one Minnesota needs to clean up. The Wolves led 38-29 after 1 quarter behind 20 from Edwards and 16 from Jonathan Kuminga, back on the floor after making his Wolves debut in Milwaukee. Then the Pistons won the 2nd quarter 36-20 and ran a thin Wolves front line off its own floor. Jalen Duren went 8-of-9 for 24. Rocco Zikarsky and Enrique Freeman both sat that game, so the size problem hasn't gone away heading into Chicago.

Chicago's preseason has been about Caleb Wilson. The No. 4 pick had a team-high 15 in a win over Phoenix, then 21 in a 104-100 loss to Memphis with 5 threes, then 17 and 5 assists at Denver. In the 125-104 win at Milwaukee the shot went cold, 4-of-11 in 24 minutes, but that came against a Bucks team that sat its whole projected starting group. Fellow rookie Dailyn Swain looked steady from the start, with 10 points and 6 assists in the opener without missing a shot.

Both injury lists are heavy on big men, and that's the real story of this game. Nic Claxton tweaked a hamstring and is out for the rest of the preseason. Zach Collins has a toe injury, and Tobe Awaka and Isaac Okoro both missed the Milwaukee game. Jalen Smith has been starting at center for coach Tiago Splitter. Awaka is only 6'8" but was the best rebounder on the floor in the opener, with 14 points and 11 boards, 6 of them offensive, in 21 minutes. If Awaka's knee keeps the two-way rookie out, the Bulls are very short on size against a Minnesota team Detroit just beat up on the glass.

Watch the minutes more than the final score. Minnesota is 5 days from opening night, so how long Edwards, Ball and Kuminga play will say more about the opener than the result does. For Chicago, the question is how Splitter lines up the rotation, with Wilson and Swain getting real minutes while Patrick Williams didn't get in against Phoenix until midway through the 3rd quarter. Tip is 7:00 PM CT.
