TLDR: Opening night on the road, in South Beach, against a Heat team that always seems to have one more body than you planned for. Minnesota starts its season Wednesday, October 21 with a brand-new point guard and the same question it always has to answer in Miami.

WED 10/21, 7:30 PMESPN

Minnesota opens its season in Miami with LaMelo Ball running a retooled rotation around Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Jonathan Kuminga. What decides it is mostly Bam Adebayo's groin: his status is still unresolved, and Miami is already short a couple of guards. The board has it close to even with the Heat slightly favored at home.

Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Edwards healthy, rested in finale by choice
  • Gobert-Beringer center pairing settled
  • Ball adds a second primary creator
  • DiVincenzo still out with Achilles
  • New-look starting 5, only preseason reps together
  • Zikarsky dealing with undisclosed injury
Miami Heat
  • Home opener at Kaseya Center
  • Spoelstra not overly concerned about Adebayo
  • Adebayo groin tightness, opener status unconfirmed
  • Larsson and Smith both missed preseason finale
  • Thin guard depth against Minnesota's ball pressure

The headline on the Minnesota side is Ball. Chris Finch went with a 10-man rotation in the preseason opener in Milwaukee, starting Ball, Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Jonathan Kuminga and Jaden McDaniels, with Bones Hyland, Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr., Trey Lyles and Joan Beringer off the bench. That's a lot of new pieces around Edwards, and opening night at Kaseya Center is the first time it counts.

Edwards shrugged off a 4-for-13 start in that opener and finished the preseason averaging 19.8 points in 22.6 minutes across 4 games. Minnesota rested most of its projected rotation in the exhibition finale, Edwards included, and that was rest, not an injury. He's expected to go Wednesday. Beringer has locked down the backup center job behind Gobert, which matters with Rocco Zikarsky dealing with an undisclosed issue.

Miami's biggest question is Bam Adebayo. He has right groin tightness, sat out the exhibition against Brooklyn, and stayed home when the Heat went to Orlando for the preseason finale. Erik Spoelstra says he isn't overly concerned. Still, nobody has said Adebayo plays Wednesday, and a Heat team without him on opening night is a very different team.

Adebayo isn't the only Heat name on the report. Pelle Larsson (illness) and Dru Smith (calf) both missed that finale in Orlando, which leaves Spoelstra without 2 backcourt bodies heading into a matchup where Ball, Edwards and Dosunmu can all put pressure on the ball. If Larsson and Smith can't go, the Heat bench gets thin in a hurry.

Minnesota has its own long-term hole. Donte DiVincenzo is still out recovering from his Achilles injury, though he's confident he'll be back at some point this season. Until he is, the Wolves need Hyland, Dosunmu and Shannon to cover his minutes, and they'll get their first real test of that on the road.

The matchup inside is the one worth watching. If Adebayo plays, his ability to switch onto Ball and Edwards and still bother Gobert at the rim is what Miami's whole defense is built on. If he sits, Gobert and Beringer should own the paint and the Heat will have to win from the perimeter. Tip is 7:30 PM ET. The board has this close to a coin flip, which feels right for 2 teams that haven't played a game that counts yet.
