TLDR: The Timberwolves rebuilt their backcourt around LaMelo Ball and the Knicks are bringing Jalen Brunson back from wrist surgery slowly. Monday, October 12, at Madison Square Garden is an early look at both projects.

Minnesota's revamped roster (LaMelo Ball at point guard, Jonathan Kuminga added beside Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert) visits a Knicks team that is bringing Jalen Brunson back slowly from July wrist surgery. The Wolves won their preseason opener easily and play in Miami before this game. New York lost its opener by 23, and Mike Brown is keeping his starters near 15 minutes, so the bench will play a big part in how this one goes.

Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Beat Milwaukee 116-97 in the preseason opener
  • Ball's passing and pace already working with Gobert
  • Kuminga adds another high-usage scorer
  • Edwards shot 4-for-13 in the opener
  • DiVincenzo still out with an Achilles injury
  • Plays at Miami first, second straight road game
New York Knicks
  • Brunson looked sharp: 12 points in 15 minutes
  • Home game at the Garden
  • Lost the opener 120-97 at Philadelphia
  • Brown called out poor physical defense
  • Starters limited to about 15 minutes

This is preseason, so how much the starters play matters more than the score. Minnesota's roster is the newer of the 2. Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert are still the core, but Ball takes over at point guard, Jonathan Kuminga arrives as a high-usage scorer and Jaden McDaniels is in line for a bigger role. Gobert already likes what he sees. He called Ball 'one of the best passers in this league' and said he gives the group the pace and ball movement it was missing.

The early returns are good. In the preseason opener at Fiserv Forum on October 5, the Wolves beat Milwaukee 116-97, the first game Ball and Edwards played together. Edwards led the team with 14 points but shot 4-for-13, so the new offense still needs work. Minnesota also plays at Miami before coming to New York. That's a second road stop and a second chance to test the Ball-Edwards pairing before the Garden. Donte DiVincenzo is still out recovering from his Achilles injury, though he's confident he'll be back at some point this season.

The Knicks opener went worse. They lost 120-97 in Philadelphia, and Mike Brown didn't hide his frustration. He said his team wasn't physical on the ball and wasn't physical with its defensive positioning, and a coach doesn't usually say that about an exhibition. Still, there was a plan behind the score. Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns each played 14:51. Brown wants to keep his starters' minutes light and build them up toward the final exhibition, which he treats as a dress rehearsal.

For New York, the biggest storyline is Brunson. He was cleared for camp after surgery on his left wrist in July and looked like himself in Philly, with 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 15 minutes. Expect a similar workload at the Garden. If the stars play about a quarter and a half, the bench gets most of the minutes, and Brown will want to see whether the physicality he called out has improved since the opener.

For Minnesota, the question is how much Ball and Edwards play together and whether Kuminga fits next to them. A pass-first point guard feeding Gobert is a new look for this team. Tip is 7:30 PM ET. The full rotations will probably only be on the floor for a few minutes, but those minutes will show more about both teams than the final score will.
